Thank God I haven't played a PC game in ages. This is precisely why I rarely turn my gaming PC on these days. On my Xbox One X and PS4 Pro, games "just work" like they are supposed to. Guess Microsoft still hasn't lifted their Windows OS's gaming reputation up from "**** as hell". Their insider newsletter once asked for suggestions on gaming through a survey. I told them that they need to have a dedicated gaming hypervisor on which games "just run" without any stupid dependency/compatibility issues. Guess they never read that OR just don't care.

Anyone tried SteamOS? Does it "just work" without any issues?

Uggg... It isn't a Microsoft issue and its been a long time since Microsoft was an issue. So stop with that nonsense. This is a Rockstar issue and their half-assed implementation.

You didn't say what the error was that is preventing the game from running.

SUCCCESS!

I built my own custom system.xml and got RDR2 running. Running beautifully at 2560 x 1440 at ~75 fps on a 1080. It dips at times to 60 but doable. but there still are bugs, like the hand cursor will not go away and others. but its running. Still no hard solutions from Rockstar. They issued two small patches to their launcher but they didn't fix my issues.

From your experience making the custom file, what do you reckon is the main issue preventing the game from running?

Rockstar's own launcher and how it hands off to Epic's launcher. So what gave me the idea was that there is an old mod for GTA4 that essentially bypasses the Rockstar Launcher to launch the game, people were saying it works for RDR2 too. I essentially did that with my custom system.xml without using the mod. Also a few other things like forcing API_DirectX12 and a few other graphic settings; VSYNC, TAA, OCCLUSION, etc.

Its running but at times I do crash and there are still bugs like the hand cursor being persistent. But I can play.

Thanks for letting us know it's a launcher issue, Tanker.

Good to hear that the Epic store is still a trash fire. I'll wait for Steam, although I imagine that if/when I get RDR2 I'll do this whether it helps or not so to bypass the Rock* launcher.

I actually wouldn't call the Epic store trash. I used it for a few games now and it does work as a generic launcher if publishers let it. The problem arises when publishers force their own launchers to launch a game. Then you have the scenario of a launcher launching another launcher to launch a game. See how convoluted and asinine that is.

In my mind I would just have everything on Steam, Blizzard launcher, and GoG. But that's just me.

Got two games this week in my neverending quest to play really old stuff out of nostalgia and being kinda cheap...

The Witcher: Expanded Edition (PC)

Steam had it for a couple of bucks the other day, and I'd never played it so figured I'd give it a shot, since I really enjoyed Witcher III and the stories.

Graphically, it's obviously dated but actually pretty impressive considering when it was made. Despite being fairly outdated itself, my machine is capable of running at max everything (I don't get to say that very often!) and it looks quite nice. Combat is... well, sadly combat is kinda boring to be honest. It basically consists of clicking on the enemy and then clicking again when the mouse pointer changes. You get extra hits if you click at the right timing. I do kinda like the "sword style" thing where you switch from hitting hard, hitting fast, or hitting wide (for groups) but even that starts to become kinda humdrum after a while.

Baulder's Gate 1 & 2 Enhanced Edition (PS4)

Let me start by saying that selling this as a "new" game is ridiculous. It isn't a new game. It isn't even really an updated version of the game remade for console play. It's literally the original PC game with slightly improved textures and some minor features added. Game Stop had it for $20 rather than the original $49 (!!!) that it was selling for, so I figured I'd check it out.

The game was built to be played with keyboard and mouse, so playing it with a controller is kinda tedious; but it's doable and to their credit they did make some efforts to streamline the process. They have most major actions mapped out to the controller and they include an in-game depiction of what does what. But a lot of what happens is so small and so low-res on the PS4 that it's hard to follow. Gonna try playing it on my PC over network to see if that works any better.

Just got started last night - playing as a Monk since I figure that would be easier given the interface.

In any event, while I am rather disappointed with the product, I'm loving the nostalgia. It's a classic.

I also play Borderlands 3, magnificent, the legitimate sequel to the first. A perfect level design. Mad weapons and enemies more fun than others.

Borderlands 3 has amazing gameplay, fun side missions, great boss encounters, and classic borderlands humor. Hours of fun, billions of guns, and a dlc roadmap that will see the light of day unlike other company's. Gearbox has out done themselves. But now i'm playing total war series specially Attila total war as a Western Roman Empire, and i think this game has a huge improvement over Rome 2, Attila is dark, gritty, and different. The Grand campaign is very interesting, and the AI very much improved.

Great Steam reviews so $6 is pretty cheap if Sherlock Holmes is right up your alley.

That's just stupid. I thought games were supposed to relieve stress, not cause it! Guess some gamers take them too seriously.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night; the Playstation version via Retroarch. Having only played older entries (NES, SNES, Game Boy) in the series, I can see why people adored this one. The game mechanics are strongly reminiscent of Super Metroid, hence why games like this are called Metroidvanias.

After well over a decade of being out of gaming and with my high end system at the time pushing it's limits I was at a cross roads as to what should I do. PC games were being dropped or not optimized for the PC then it all just fell apart and I lost interest in newer games so I continued to play the games I had and not build a new rig until it all faded away. Come last year I purchased a new beefy laptop and a game caught my attention which was Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts which I enjoyed but it was short so I went back a bit trying out it's predecessor Sniper Ghost Warrior 3 enjoying that as well. I have given Ground Branch a nudge but that is still in development so I'm starting to find part time interest again.

I can't really play any demanding games on this laptop, the last one I've played was League of Legends a couple years ago and it often overheated during the summer season, support bot or mage mid were my preferred. Sometimes I give Agar.io (a rudimentary multiplayer browser game) a go but pretty rarely.

I am fond of online games. Earlier, I did not play that much. But the quarantine changed everything, and online games helped a lot to live through the distancing period. I did a lot of investigation online and found the site where you can use all the content absolutely for free. Currently, I am playing 7 Sins https://gryonline2.pl/7-sins/. You can join me too if you want.

Good necro.

I finally made it through the EVGA queue after over a year, 3060ti XC now powers my primary gaming PC. Also picked up 3 months of Xbox game pass for PC for $1. Did a couple of playthroughs of Halo Infinite campaign. Now I am playing the Avengers. Which is more fun than reviews led me to think it would be. Combat system is deep enough to make grinding for new moves worthwhile.

Skyrim... no, really. Got the anniversary edition. Some graphics updates, some new quests, and built-in survival mode.

It's still fun after all these years.

Pathfinder Kingmaker, got it as an Epic free game. I'm through Act 1 and just started Act 2. The non-kingdom part of the game reminds me of NWN 1 and I like it.
