Microsoft apologizes

First, a big thanks to all of our customers for your open and candid feedback on Surface Book and Surface Pro 4. For those of you who've had a less-than-perfect experience, we’re sorry for any frustration this has caused. Please know that we're reading your comments and hearing you loud and clear. Your input is incredibly valuable in helping us address your questions with timely updates and fixes. Since launch, we have aggressively pursued the most pressing feedback. We have already issued a number of updates via Windows Update and are working to issue additional updates and fixes as soon as possible to further improve the overall Surface experience.

Earlier today, Microsoft offered an apology to users of its OneDrive cloud storage service, following a massive backlash in response to changes that it announced last month, which included the removal of its unlimited storage offering for Office 365 customers.

Microsoft's Douglas Pearce said wrote:
In November we made a business decision to reduce storage limits for OneDrive. Since then, we’ve heard clearly from our Windows and OneDrive fans about the frustration and disappointment we have caused. We realize the announcement came across as blaming customers for using our product. For this, we are truly sorry and would like to apologize to the community.

[...]

We are all genuinely sorry for the frustration this decision has caused and for the way it was communicated. Thank you for sticking with us.

Well, at least Microsoft is more humble than Apple. Microsoft definitely didn't need to apologize. It's not like they were going to suffer a big financial loss if they didn't apologize, but they did apologize. I love it when businesses acknowledge when they were wrong. It gives me hope that maybe, just maybe, Microsoft isn't completely evil, wanting to kill puppies and kittens to fuel their furnaces to generate steam to provide electricity for their datacenters. No, that would be Google. And Apple just does along and dances, tra la la, oh whee, we took this, made 1 little improvement from last year's model, and will only charge you 100 percent of the price to upgrade. Meanwhile, back in Microsoft land, oh preeze sir. We ah did not mean to offend you. Our humbrest aporogies. Keeyoto sunso sheemakoto. You have very big hard drive. Your hard drive so big. We no take away unrimited storage.

And Microsoft should apologize for Windows 8 Metro and trying to force everyone to upgrade to Windows 10 as well...

The company is not backtracking on these changes. The unlimited storage will still be cut to 1TB next year (with a 12 month grace period for those with more than 1TB stored), and free storage is still being cut to 5GB. However, current users of OneDrive will be able to opt out of these changes. OneDrive users should receive an e-mail soon that contains a link. Clicking the link will enable them to retain their 15GB base storage, as well as their 15GB camera roll bonus. This won't, however, be a permanent feature—the storage must be claimed by the end of January—and it won't be available to new OneDrive users.

Microsoft should also do the following:

  • Apologize for installing nagware on hundreds of millions of 7/8.1 machines without consent, and provide a permanent opt-out solution for users not interested in Windows 10.
  • Apologize for any loss of time/work/productivity/money caused by their Windows Update service automatically rebooting machines without any user input
  • Apologize for implementing stealth data collection/telemetry on 7/8.1 users without their consent, and require that all users explicitly agree to this practice before it can be enabled across the entire Windows platform
  • Apologize to users and shareholders (profusely) for destroying a very good moble OS platform (and a big part of what should have been Microsoft's future) with baffling boneheaded executive decisions

Eh, Microsoft should do the following:

  1. Kiss my arse
  2. Eff off and die
  3. Failing that, send all its executives unaccompanied on holiday to Finland.
:P

Or, it could keep on making gigabucks and not giving a toss.

Unfortunately, the nagware and autoupgrades are with consent, technically.

Ya. Totally. Apple never apologizes for anything.

They most certainly had to apologize. This is a major fiasco.
