The end of CyanogenMod??

Sat Jul 23, 2016 7:09 am

What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I love the corporate speak. We're pivoting to apps.

This is a real shame. That started out as a community project to free Android from all the vendor bloat. I totally understand trying to commercialize your product to make a buck, but it's sad when a project like that crashes and burns.

No. Cyanogenmod != Cyanogen OS or Cyanogen, Inc. The open-source project will still be there, albeit with fewer paid developers.

Yes, you're right, I jumped to some conclusions there. Hopefully the community keeps the project going strong.

The community project will get hit hard too, as it'll lose a huge chunk of its actual development bandwidth. The trouble with free software is that very few customers will pay for something if they don't have to.

Yeah, looks like CM (the ROM) will still exist, but development on it may slow down a lot. As a satisfied user of it for the last four years (ever since I've had a smartphone), I am very annoyed with this turn of events.

Pivoting over backwards into our newest app: Shallow Grave.
