My recommendation is to wait for the GTX 1050 refresh of the Dell XPS 15, and then grab the best 1080P variant that you can afford.  Alternately, you could wait for the new XPS 15s and then buy a GTX 960 refurb/overstock/used unit on the cheap (albeit without much longevity).
Build quality is much more important for mobile purchases than desktops, and Dell has a proven record of solid units in this space.  Alternately, the i7559-763BLK is a great deal (especially if it gets refreshed with Pascal).
Whatever you do, avoid the "3K/4K/5K monitor" craze.  It'll kill both your battery life and frame rates.  Also, be sure to read reviews on individual laptops, as gaming performance is based as much on design as specs.  Expensive parts will perform like cheap parts if they are thermally constrained and throttle.

For $1200 USD I’d go with the ASUS TUF Gaming A15 I just reviewed.

https://hothardware.com/reviews/asus-tu ... a15-review

It’s about as fast as the Dell G5 that came out in May but has twice the SSD space and a nicer keyboard and port layout.

The Zephyrus G14 is okay but the GPU is a Max-Q model. Unless you need sub-5-pound portability I’d look at the bigger one. The A15 outran it in basically every gaming test.

I know this thread is 3+ years old but we might as well keep it current.

I'm considering new laptops for the wife and I sometime next year.

Wife needs a 15" display with a number pad and I would also like a 15" display but don't need a number pad.
Hers would be for work and light gaming mine would be for light/medium gaming.

I'm waiting for the rest on the Renoir 4000 series laptops to come out then I'm looking for:

6c/12t 4000 series
16gb ram
1tb ssd

Wife's needs to be thin/light.
Mine can be a bit thicker
both need good cooling

Funny enough budget for both is $2500 total or +/-$1250 each
Right now I'm willing to wait, and I might even consider buying used it is a Dell or HP business series.
Main machine: Core I7 -2600K @ 4.0Ghz / 16 gig ram / Radeon RX 580 8gb / 500gb toshiba ssd / 5tb hd
Old machine: Core 2 quad Q6600 @ 3ghz / 8 gig ram / Radeon 7870 / 240 gb PNY ssd / 1tb HD

For me, I choose neither on the list. I don’t see them as very practical and reasonable. My suggestion is (hoping that you would consider) the Dell XPS 15. It is simply one of the best laptops for engineering students to enter the market in 2020. This laptop doesn't hold back when it comes to internals and features that boost the overall computing experience, combining staggering strength in a sleek slim and compact frame. I am not saying This laptop isn't fine, but it is currently the best laptop for engineering students.

I have been using Acer Predator Helios 300. It seemingly can handle most gaming tasks at recommended settings but the design of the laptop is not impressive.

Hello,
I'm searching for a laptop for gaming. I needed your help because I've never used a laptop before and have only ever used stationary PCs.
I'm currently playing COD, Apex Legends, CS:GO, FIFA...
Conditions:
- 17-inch wide display
- I'd much rather have an illuminated keyboard.
- As previously said, it should be appropriate for gaming.
I am willing to invest up to around $1500.
I was thinking about this one https://productz.com/en/lenovo-legion-5/p/yDJ2w from Lenovo but I want to hear your suggestions first.

For $1500 you won't get anything faster than a GeForce RTX 3050 Ti, but for the games you're playing that's plenty. Bear in mind you won't play the very latest games at ultra settings.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-crossh ... Id=6501191

That MSI will do the job for $1200 with budget room to spare. Alder Lake may be all the rage, but Tiger Lake Core i7s are still stupid fast. 16 GB of memory is good. The 512 GB SSD is a little small, but I'd buy that and spend $100 of the savings on a 1 TB drive and be set for a while, or spend $175 of it on a 2 TB drive and be good to go for the usable life of the laptop.
