Was this a good deal, or did I make a mistake?

Thu Aug 03, 2017 6:16 pm

I did some research before I bought it and it seems like a very good deal to me, but I want to hear it straight from the Gerbil's mouth. I was looking at this week's Lyft driver perks and one of them was 42% off a Lenovo Ideapad Y700. Here are the specs of the model it applied to:
i7-6700HQ (4 cores, 8 threads, up to 3.5GHz boost)
16GB DDR4-2133
1TB HDD + 256GB SSD
GeForce GTX 960M w/ 4GB GDDR5
15" 4K IPS touchscreen
JBL speakers w/ sub (wut) and Dolby Home Theater audio (whatever that means)
Intel Realsense camera (k)
backlit keyboard
Stagelight included (it's a $10 beginner's DAW optimized for touch, could be useful for quickly jotting down ideas when on the road)

I was in the market for a decently powerful laptop for school that can handle audio production and maybe some video editing, while being able to satisfy my gaming needs but not to an extent that I'll want to spend all my time gaming. This seemed like the perfect fit for the job. It came to $982 after taxes and an upgrade to a 2 year warranty (from a 1 year base). This model with these specs retails for $1500. So what do ya'll think? Did I get a good deal or could I have done better? I tried to go through Lenovo's student discount program to see if I could get a better deal there, but for the same system and warranty it would have been a little more.

"Gamers on a tight budget of around $1000 USD should consider the 15.6-inch Y700 as it is currently one of the least expensive systems with a GTX 960M alongside the Acer Aspire V15 Nitro. We recommend dropping both UHD and touchscreen options in favor of a SKU with secondary HDD and proper GTX 960M with 4 GB VRAM."

if you search amazon for "i7-6700hq gtx 1060" you get quite a few builds not too far from $1k.

Yeah but none with a 4K panel, and an IPS one at that. I'm honestly glad it doesn't have a very powerful GPU, it will keep me from spending too much time gaming.

The features are nice and the price is awesome. That's enough to say that it a great deal indeed!

I never heard of Stagelight, but any time you can travel without dongles and external hard drives, that's a good thing in my book.

I despise the Cubase dongle, but it's not the only one I have, so I have 3 of them all lashed together and plugged into a little Targus 4-port passive USB hub. But still, if I ever lost those, there'd be a bunch of stuff that won't work anymore.

The only thing worse than a dongle is having hard drive based licenses. Grrr!
