Your Personal Smart Phone Evolution

Fri Oct 06, 2017 10:57 am

While cleaning up my PC work area, I was surprised to find every smart phone I have owned. I have been tethered to Verizon (I agree they suck) the entire time I have had smart phones, thus the 2+ year period between each one. I bounced around carriers with my flip phones, but got a job that required what was considered a smart phone back in the (definitely not) good old days. The original iPhone was out, but considered a toy. I needed a real phone. So the first one phone was a Samsung SCH-i760, with a 400mhz processor, 64mb of ram, and Windows Mobile 6. These phones were awful, but built like tanks, and great for the web on WIFI, but otherwise a giant POS. Windows Mobile 6.0 was awful. They did release 6.1, but it would only install on a Vista machine (to this day). BTW, it still works perfectly. Next up, my first Android, a Droid 2. Still love the slide out keyboard. Next up, my first modern smart phone, Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Again Moto and Verizon combined to bork OS upgrades, every Galaxy Nexus got 4.4, Verizon stopped at 4.3. It runs Lineage 14.1 and is actually faster than when it had Android 4.3. Finally, at almost 3 years old the OG Droid Turbo. Verizon and Moto combined to get the 5.1, and 6.1 out to the Turbo a few months after the next Android version came out. So two months after 6 comes out, we got 5. Good fun. I have a pic of them all lined up if anyone wants to show their collection, feel free.
Edit: My bad on the pic, I have been a member for well over 10 years so I know that wasn't it.

Your image link isn't available, possibly because you haven't been a TR member long enough to bypass the spam limiter? In any case, you can also upload to an image-sharing site and point people to the outside link. One of the mods might have to approve it for you.

I've had relatively few smartphones, partly because I started late. First was a Google Nexus One that I picked up used from another TR regular, and activated on T-Mobile. Then a Galaxy Nexus, which bathed briefly in the Pacific Ocean but survived with a DI water wash and dry-out. Then I switched to Verizon for work reasons and got a new Samsung S4. Milked that one as long as I could, and now using a Nexus 5X. I figure by the time this one croaks I'll be ready for a used Pixel.

Between my wife & I, for non-dumbphones started out with a Kin1 and then upgraded to the Kin2 (great phone at the time). Then we went to a low-end android, which was a disaster. Since then has been all iPhone. First up was an iPhone 3GS (hers), then the 5S (mine), then the iPhone 4 (hers), then the 6+ (mine). Our next and now current are the 6 (hers), then the 7+ (mine).

Nokia N70 (TI OMAP 1710)
Nokia N8 (ARM11)
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (Snapdragon 801)
OnePlus 5 (Snapdragon 835)

My upgrade cycle is 3-5 years, I usually use them until they fall apart (sony) or get lost (nokia). I mean, the nokias are indestructible, how else am I going to need to replace them?

I was very late to the smartphone party. As in, I'm still on my first one, an LG G4.

Blackberry Pearl 8100
Moto Razr XT910 (crappy battery life, I'm still using a Razr Maxx for my work phone)
Moto X Gen 1 (favorite phone, borked camera software via pushed update less than a year after I bought it significantly degraded camera quality and had to manually adjust exposure)
Samsung Galaxy S7 (best camera)

My blackberry drowned, but I still have my Razr and Moto X and they still work. I turn them on from time to time to do app updates over WiFi (not sure why I do this)

First smartphone was Verizon's version of the Samsung Galaxy S2. It sucked
Went to the HTC 8X Windows phone on Verizon. Awesome phone but you know...Windows phone.
Now have an iPhone 6. Moderately happy with it.

My workplace bought me a Motorola Droid, then a couple years later I migrated to a Droid 4. I kept that for almost four years before getting a Nexus 5X, which I had to turn in a couple months ago due to budget cuts.

My one and only personal smartphone is my wife's old Nexus 5, which has a fresh battery and Lineage OS.

Apple iPhone SE 64 GB
Apple iPhone 4S 16 GB
Sony Ericsson Vivaz

before that, my dumbphones were

Sony Ericsson W910i
Nokia 6230i
Nokia 6230
some SAGEM p.o.s. that my mum bought me in 1999, from googling just now maybe a RC 815 plus?

Have genuinely been pleased with all of them except the SAGEM, my favourite 2 were the Sony Ericsson ones though -- for different reasons, I loved both those little guys.

Edit: there was a Sony after the SAGEM, I can't remember the name. C80, maybe? Silver, nice form factor, loved it too. 8)
Edit 2: Sony J70e

1. HTC 8X Windows
2. 6S Plus (current phone)

Spent several years avoiding smartphones and trying to find a halfway decent Feature Phone before giving up. Went with a Windows phone first (HTC 8X mentioned above) and really liked the OS, but when the battery started to die after almost 3 years, there was no suitable replacement. iOS is okay. I like that I get my updates immediately. I like that it's universally supported. I'll probably get the battery replaced when it's time, and hopefully I can get 4 or more years out the device.

I've been with the same carrier since 2000 and have not really evolved much since I'm only on my third smartphone. Originally signed with Voice Stream with Ericsson basic flip-phone (remember Jamie Lee Curtis?) and it became T-Mobile a few years later (then advertised by Catherine Zeta-Jones). Since I was prior military I moved around every few years and their reception was dismal in some areas but I stuck with them since they give discounts to loyal members. I started using smart phones with the Google G1 and only know Android. The G1 had a handy slide out mini qwerty keyboard with tactile keys that was nice for texting but was thick with a hefty weight to it.

I switched later to another HTC model for a few years and now use the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Re: Your Personal Smart Phone Evolution

I went from a horrendous Samsung slide-out keyboard phone and it was literally the worst phone I ever had. By chance I ended up inheriting an old iPhone 3G from a relative, which at that point (2011-2012) was already a dinosaur from a smart phone standpoint. Still, I was blown away how a phone could be so useful.

About 6 months later, the charge port (stupid 30-pin iPod connector) broke and it stopped charging. I was so impressed by the platform I immediately went out and picked up a new iPhone 5. That phone was again amazing to me as it had all the features I was used to in the old phone, but was infinitely faster.

I am now pretty firmly in the iOS camp, currently I have a 6s Plus and my only regret is that I bought a 16 GB version. I waffle back and forth on if that's enough of a pain to me to upgrade to an 8 or if I just ride my otherwise perfectly good phone for another year or two.

Not to derail the thread, but I really miss my Windows Phone. Really a shame it never caught on and I still think it's a superior OS. Oh well...

OG Droid
Droid 2 Global
Nexus 6P

Yeah, I hung on to the Droid 2 Global for FAR too long. Kept hoping someone else would see the benefit of the slide-out keyboard.

I had a couple nokias and a flip phone or two before I started my smartphone history.

iPhone 8GB (original model, dad has that now as a glorified iPod)
iPhone 4 32GB (currently functioning as a music player in an iPod dock for the kids)
Nexus 5 32GB

That Nexus 5 is currently almost 3 years old, and I'm starting to consider replacing it with something else that I can get for less than $400 unsubsidized. Alternatively, I may just buy a new battery for it, and flash LineageOS so that I at least get security updates again.

Ohh, I can do this! I have most of them in a drawer, and I know the Strive is in one of my electronics boxes so maybe someday I'll be able to take a historical picture too. Plus the AIM news has me a feeling a little nostalgic about that which is, that which was, and that which could have been.

My entire cell phone history, in chronological order:

Some terrible flip phone in high school, circa 2000 to 2003. Didn't do much with it, it was only for emergencies.
Don't remember what I had in college, 2003 to 2008. I do remember that most calls were made with a land line using one of those long distance calling cards, so it must not have been much of a phone. It might have been some kind of Samsung slider, again used only for emergencies and maybe when traveling.
Samsung Strive, 2010 to 2012. Slider with a nice keyboard, really the first time I played around with text messaging. I liked that phone, though it was not 'smart' by any definition.
LG Quantum C900 slider phone, 2012 to 2015. This was my first true smartphone, and a WP7 device. I got it for a pair of software projects, but liked it enough to use it as my main phone. Unlike most WP7 devices, it could handle app sideloading for free so I write and deployed several of them.
Google Nexus 4, 2013. I got my first Android phone about the time I took my current job. I liked it, and jumped right into Android homebrew development, but unfortunately broke my shiny new phone's screen while moving into my shiny new apartment. Not keen on dropping another 300-400 bucks on one of these things, I went back to the trusty LG for a while.
Sony Xperia Z1 Compact, 2015 to present. Second Android phone, still pocket-sized unlike the vast monoliths the Android OEMs are so fond of. Only a couple of sideloads to my credit on this one, as the new job turned into a career change of the first order and came along with some different personal development priorities (i.e. mobile dev time became 3D design time). Ironically, given that as well as my recent phone history I have not actually made a phone case for it.

Yep. Windows Phone 8/8.1 was an excellent OS. It died due to Microsoft's own neglect, lack of devices, and bull***t exclusivity games with the cell networks. Depending on the provider, users often didn't have access to flagship devices, and some had no upgrade path at all.

Microsoft had a good product, ownership of Nokia's hardware division, and the funding to make it happen. Had they developed their flagship device and released it across all networks, then worked to get more 3rd party devs onboard, they'd they'd probably be a strong player in the mobile market right now (even with the late start), and have a different future for the company. Absolutely no one is at fault besides MS themselves.

I'm a bit of a phone junkie. I was on the smartphone train very early for work, and really I just love what they could do. Granted, some of these were for work so there are many times I have two phones on me. Obviously there is some overlap in the dates on this stuff.

Had a few Moto/LG/Nokia dumb-phones before this ridiculous list too.

Blackberry Curve 8310 (Even though I'd not use a BB today I really loved them back then. <3 those keyboards)
Blackberry Bold 9930
OG Motorola Droid
iPhone 4
Samsung Galaxy S3
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
OG Moto X
Moto X (2nd Gen)
Nexus 6P
iPhone 6S
iPhone 7
Pixel XL (current)

I'm not sure where i'm going to go next, but it'll definitely be a Pixel XL 2 or iPhone X unless something really catches my eye over the next year.

This looks like fun!

For me, the progression has been:

Palm Treo 750
i-mate Ultimate 9502
LG VS750 Fathom
Motorola Droid 3
Motorola Droid 4
Blackberry Passport

I rode Windows Mobile until they stopped making hardware keyboard phones.

I did the same with Android - the Droid 4s are currently running LineageOS 14, and have an almost complete mainline Linux kernel.

The Passport is my only foray into BBOS, and it's been quite a pleasant experience. The Passport has the best keyboard I've ever seen, the capacitive touch implementation is straight genius. Thanks to Cobalt, I'm running whatever Android apps I want (although the 4.3 runtime is imposing a deadline in the short term: banking apps, for instance, are warning they'll require more recent Android soon). BBOS is dead, and the Priv was no real upgrade. TCL's KeyONE is interesting; I'd have already picked one up if they'd used a flagship processor, but the Snapdragon 625 is no upgrade.

Where to from here? At this point, unless BlackBerry elects to unlock the Passport's bootloader (this will not happen) it looks like my run with hardware keyboards may be over once this phone dies.

Honourable mention goes to my HP iPaq hx4700. Window Mobile 6 was a **** OS but it was the best available at the time. HP barely got a working version of 6.1 out the door and never bothered to release drivers for the VGA display.

Switched back to feature phones after losing my Handspring 270. The SE K510 and Nokia 3120 Classic were among the most trouble-free and satisfying phones ever.

Then I got caught up with the iPhone 3GS, 5, SE. My newest throwaway Android is the Moto E3 with the bigly battery.

Still miss the 270 and its Trekky visor window. First smart love never dies.

Same, still on my first smartphone and zero interest in updating from it yet.

Love the utility and I love the phone, an unlocked HTC 10. Was offered an update to Nougat just a couple weeks after it released before a lot of apps even supported it. If anything the constant stream of OS updates is borderline irritating, but at least they're optional and I can choose when, where, and on what connection to get them. Not bad for an MVNO, even the coverage is leaps and bounds better than the old dumbphone.

Samsung Exhibit II/Galaxy Exhibit
Samsung Moment 920
OG Moto X (still working somewhat, just has a major crack across the screen from a drop)
Galaxy Note 4 (so far favorite of all time, spoiled me on large screens; currently my wife is using it to replace her Note 5, but needed the Samsung Fit stuff)
LG V20 (temporary, until I get my V30, this will go to my wife, the GN4 will go to middle child)
Patiently waiting on the V30.

I would've never gone with the Note 4, if it wasn't for a trainer at a previous driving company that had one. 5.7" of screen real estate had me hooked, now, I can't go back to anything smaller.

Samsung M610 flip phone -
1st cellphone in 2006, Not a data phone, Super thin very durable. It could hold and play full movies, great screen for size. Annoying feature, had to use wierd adapter for headphones and charging. Used it until it could not get service one day.

HTC Thunderbolt -
Power hog but fast and easy to move data to and from phone. headphone jack never worked properly. Nearly unbreakable, never broke it, built in tuner. Switched because I got caught in a gully washer while out hiking and it was never the same afterwards.

Samsung Galaxy III - repaired/replaced three times
Super light, slippery, easily broken from knee height falls. Tried super protector cases, they get caught in pocket as phone pulled out and phone gets grabbed from fingers, falls and breaks from knee height. This kept happening. headphones worked mostly. After third time broken, switched phones.

Moto X Pure Edition -
Unfrickinbreakable, simple Unicorn Beetle case, multiple falls from waist height even from head height when I try to catch it and knock it higher; it just bounces; screen not even cracked. Fast, holds charge a long time, charges very quickly, headphones work, good screen, camera is good enough, up to 128GB SD. If photos moved to SD; thumbing through photos is a little slow. No direct link to PC works properly (Win XP64 Win XP7). Must take out card and use SD adapter but it works. Did I mention unbreakable?
