Did you already see Dr. Fish's front-page article on making the same leap, and customizing Android using a Windows-replacement launcher?

I did, I already run my work phone (Galaxy 7) with the Windows launcher. It's alright, a bit buggy from time to time but I’m not sure if that’s the Samsung or the app. I don’t like Samsung phones (the hardware is good, the interface borders on obnoxious bloatware) so I went another route.

I happen to think that the Windows Phone Metro interface made sense when phone screens were small (circa 3.5-4 inches), but has not scaled well with today's larger-screened phones. I'm pretty happy with the light skinning of OxygenOS in my OnePlus 5, but pre-ordered a Nokia 9 Pureview (Android One) because I want to play around with the penta-camera setup.

The GPS is a good example... It doesn't allow me to say NO to toll roads.

That sounds like a problem with the app you're using. What are you using - Google Maps? Anyway, I don't think that's a problem with the phone.

Nokia Here Maps lets you set 'No Toll Roads' under 'route preferences'.

Google Maps also has 'Avoid Tolls' under 'Route Options'.

I figured out the no toll roads thing a while back. I guess the biggest thing I dislike about android is the amount of notifications that you get, it's like all notifications are turned on. And the fact that they have a habit of turning back on after updates. It's so bad that I turn on Do not Disturb to get rid of them.

Kinda funny, you hear a lot about the evils of distracted driving and Google maps is the worst offender! "Look, I found a new route and it's 30 seconds shorter!" Or "I found a new route and it's 3 minutes longer!" When I go to L.A. it's challenging enough to drive in that traffic, let alone deal with the pop-ups. In a lot of places they work well, but in L.A., nothing is shorter. One place I work is 7 miles from the plant, at 5 am in the morning it takes me about 15 minutes to drive to the plant... 3 pm... 45 minutes or longer, back streeting or freeways, neither is faster.

Hmmm, I personally haven't had issues of apps turning notifications back on. I've definitely limited a lot, too. I'm lucky (read: smart) enough to own a Pixel though, so maybe the settings/interactions of the particular apps that I use is different.

Samsung apps have done it for sure, I think because I uninstalled them. Samsung always likes to put them back on the phone and it gets set to the default setting of "bug the crap out of the user mode"...

Just got the new phone and I'm digging it. Very nice, I love the stripped down OS and the Nova launcher.
