14 inches at 1080P

Sun Oct 07, 2018 1:06 am

Had a chance to pilfer a Dell E7440 chassis out of the e-waste bin at work but didn't know its specs since the motherboard was well and truly shot. Found a cheap chassis on eBay that was missing the LCD and HDD and picked up that plus a spare power brick, already had a spare SSD kicking around. Did the mix-and-match, powered up the repaired machine, installed Windows 10, and then thought I was looking at the usual 1366x768 until I pulled up the Display Properties and see 1920x1080 plus 150% scaling. Set scaling back to 100% and...whoa. That is tiny.

The display is bright, has a matte finish, and seems to be some sort of IPS, so it's usable at this resolution, but I didn't know anyone even offered 1080P at 14", at least not on a non-touchscreen interface.

My eyes are clearly not so young anymore.

1080p @ 14" is actually kinda paltry for a laptop these days. Most stuff is much higher DPI.

You might want to put that scaling back up to 125% or something. I use 1080p @ 100% on a 15.6". That's just about right to me.

125% seems to break some programs IME. 150% works better but, I've noticed, with discernable mouse lag.

I run 100% at 1080p on my 14" laptop. It's a little tiny but not unusable. Scaling does make it a blurry mess.

So far I've found 1600x900 to be a sweet spot for any platform around 14" and under that isn't using a touchscreen as its primary interface.

OTOH I do like the idea of being able to open two Word/PDF/both documents side by side on one display for review, which works pretty well at 1080p, and those kinds of documents scale pretty well with in-program zooming.
