Ryzen 9 4900HS takes the mobile performance crown

Tue Mar 31, 2020 5:13 am

New laptops with AMD's Ryzen 4000 Mobile "Renoir" APUs are showing up on store shelves and reviewers' doorsteps. These 7 nm chips have surpassed Intel's 14 nm chips for both performance and power consumption. Has Intel ever been in the situation of not leading the laptop space, or is this a totally new paradigm?

Here are a few reviews of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which pairs the Ryzen 9 4900HS with a GeForce RTX 2060 MaxQ GPU for a reasonable $1450:

The last Intel was behind in laptop/DTR space for raw performance was during K8-era. Mobile Pentium 4s couldn't keep up. Pentium-Ms were almost as fast but were energy efficient.

Intel really cannot complete in the mobile space now they no longer have an architecture and node advantage. Factory-overclocking SKUs (upcoming mobile Comet Lakes) to save face in epenis benchmarks is going backfire.

From https://www.pcworld.com/article/3534769 ... ptops.html:

It takes a desktop Core i9 and 10-pound chassis to beat a 3.5-pound laptop with AMD’s Ryzen 9 4900HS in it.

AMD's marketing department should have made a catchy ad showing their Ryzen 9 cheetah running circles around the Intel Core i9 900 pound gorilla because the general public doesn't care about benchmarks.
