Iphone officially has netflix

Mon Sep 06, 2010 1:25 pm

I'm sure many of you have figured this out already and I'm just behind the curve, but the iphone now has streaming netflix support. The app was just released back on the 26th.It allows you to stream anything that was on your instant que via 3g or wifi. Can't vouch for the 3g but i just tried it out through my wifi and the connection and video stream was up and running in seconds and the picture quality was amazing. This is frikin awesome it was the main app i've been wishing for since i bought my 3gs.

Perhaps I am becoming an old fart, I just don't understand why anyone would pay to watch a movie on a tiny screen, or even not pay and watch a movie on a small screen. To me these phones are so complex yet cool that phone companies are making the money on selling you stuff for trying to find its purpose rather than practical use, so as an owner you will feel better about dropping the $$$ on a cool toy.

Now watching same movie on a 120" HD projection system with 2kW of audio power (potential) on a nice Klipsh speaker system, now THAT is what movies are meant to be played on.

The iPhone is great for movies on the go. the screen size is right where it should be. if you sit down and put the phone down on a desk or table, it is easily big enough to watch a movie.

The quality of streaming movies is still at that point in general, ime/imo (although admittedly I no longer have the pipe to watch higher-bitrate offerings anyway). I'd rate this as not something you'd do for a movie you care about or if alternatives exist, but if you've got nothing else to do and you've got an ipod with you, why not?

Streaming via high def Netflix or Hulu Plus delivers a 720p stream at 1.5-3.5Mbps. It's not perfect quality but it's easily better than DVD. I haven't gotten a Blu-Ray disc from Netflix in months because I'm so wrapped up in streaming TV shows.

Well in my defense i had both my iphone and netflix long before the app came out.Netflix i've had for much longer.Actually went over a year with out cable thanks to it.Just used a tv tuner card with an antenna and torrents for new weekly shows and netflix streaming for everything else.Would still be without cable if my new roommates hadn't insisted apon it.As for the paying for tv viewing on a small screen i'm with you a 100%.I wouldn't pay to just watch streaming shows via my phone, but since i already have the service being able to watch it on my phone now is a huge plus.
