I just got my new laptop. It's been a month in the building process but finally showed up!

Here are the specs:

Who made it?

It's a Sager 8170-s. I purchased it from Xotic PC.

Oh and I changed the video card to the ATI 6970m instead of the Nvidia offering.

Quite a beast. 6970M is Barts-based, right? As far as laptops go, it looks like you've got the pick of the litter.

Yep, it's barts based. I am installing Windows right now and cannot wait to see how some of my games look on it.

The power brick is ENORMOUS and could easily break a foot if dropped.

My phone handles all my light work. The new laptop... everything else. I have an ultra portable Lenovo that work assigned me too if I for some reason don't want to carry the beast around. Really though, 8 pounds is nothing. I am not worried about it.

Good catch, I missed that one. Disabling the paging file is like having a hybrid car and then permanently disabling one of the complementary systems.

So, I got the system all built. It is BLAZING fast. I have not timed it exactly but power button to desktop cannot be more than 15 or so seconds.

I tried several games all maxed out and they play/look perfect.

The paging file is on the second drive. I didn't want it on the primary. If so many programs didn't look for it I wouldn't use it all. It's almost useless with 16GB RAM.

Here is the bad part. I have a stuck pixel. I have been trying to recover it without any luck so far but I am not done working on it. The pixel policy is 5 dead (that seems crazy) before they will replace however they have an unconditional 30day return policy. So I need to decide if I want to return it or not over the dead pixel.

I'd probably just get used to it. You had to wait forever to get it the first time. It's rare (in my experience over the last few years, it hasn't happened at all) but it does still happen.

Also, where is the stuck pixel? If it's in or near the center of the screen it'd be a bigger deal than, say, the far left or far right.

BTW if you clicked the link from the home page (Hot Threads) you could expect real baby pictures.

The problem with disabling the page file is that you don't actually have the ability to prevent Windows from paging. If you launch a program and it requests 768MB of RAM, Windows will give it priority for 768MB of RAM, even if it doesn't need to use it all right now. If the required commit charge of the active applications exceeds the available system memory, and there is no page file available, Windows will instead go about merrily evicting idle code that already lives on the hard drive somewhere -- program DLLs, for example. Depending on your system, these may be more fragmented across the drive than the page file would be, and thus slower to retrieve later. Contrawise, if a program requests a substantial memory allocation but doesn't seem to be using all of it at the moment, Windows may move some of that program's memory space to the page file in order to free up the system RAM for things that are active.

The likelihood of running into these situations depends on how you use your system, and what Superfetch is up to (assuming you're using Vista or 7). But in most cases, even if you have a large amount of RAM installed, disabling the page file isn't going to significantly change what Windows was going to do anyway. And even with 16GB of RAM, maxing things out isn't impossible. I've blown up 4GB without even trying (2GB RAM, 2GB page file) while manipulating high-resolution digital photos, for example.
