Netgear CM700 vs Arris SB6190

Sun May 07, 2017 5:00 pm

It's been awhile since I've had to choose a modem since I have in home fiber at my house. My parents are finally going to ditch there garbage DSL provider and will be going with Comcast which obviously has its own faults but is certainly superior to what they currently have. Since they will only be getting Internet service only through Comcast I'm trying to decide between the Netgear CM700 or the Arris Surfboard SB6190. Since DOCSIS 3.1 will no doubt be some time before it enters there area I figured it wasn't worth the extra $100 bucks for the next tier up on both brands models. Anyhow, just curious if anyone had anything bad to say on either of them.

Arris and Comcast usually make a very compatible duo.
Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

I had Arris modems for over a decade...never a problem with the modems, they tend to outlive their usefulness. :)

Suggest getting the Arris SB6183, which is about $30 cheaper and is more than enough for most US residential cable modem links. More recent discussion here, also the SB6190 uses the Intel Puma 6 chipset which has a litany of problems.

The recent discussions (which Ludi linked) would make me weary of the 6190 until doing more research. Actually, even the 6141 for $50 will be good for everything up to Comcast's 300mbit tier. Unless you think they're going to want to pay for more than 300mbps, the more expensive models will provide no difference whatsoever.

Arris SB6190 is definitely a great option for you. I personally do not use any of these 2 but if I would have to make a choice then Arris would get picked up!
