USB Sharing through Network (Vir D-link DIR-882 router)

Thu Jan 30, 2020 11:46 am

I've recently got a D-link DIR-882 router and thought to give it a test to its USB sharing function (SAMBA). I can't make it work in Windows 10 no matter what. I have an old Win 7 desktop and it can see the USB devices connected to the router just fine, but Win 10 refuses to do so.
In file explorer, whenever I try to connect with the router address (192.168.0.1), I can enter the credential just fine, but the drive does not show up. I have SMB 1 activated (D-link needs that). When I try to connect with the Map Network drive (read this instruction in a D-link forum), I get an error Windows cannot access \\192.168.0.1, error code 0x80070043.

Anyone has any idea? I tried the enabling "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon"-fix, it did not work. I tried also putting "“Network security: LAN Manager authentication level” to “Send LM & NTLM responses”", didn't work either.

SMB 1 as in, the legacy version?
Still sounds like something about Win10 not having legacy SMB enabled by default.

Maybe try testing with another computer where only v1 is enabled to rule that out.

Is there a v2 (or 3) that you can also enable?
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

I have enabled legacy SMB, but no result.

What do you mean? Are you referring to router firmware or the SMB?

Setting on the router, or an updated router firmware that added that support (unlikely)?

That's a pretty modern router. Seems strange if it really can't do SMB >= 2. Assuming that's the problem.

If you're adventurous, maybe DD-WRT would work better:
