Boot camp cross-partition access

Tue Oct 27, 2015 12:16 pm

Ok. I've purchased Windows 10 home 64 bit and downloaded the ISO from Microsoft. I'm going to install it this evening. Can I access my OSX partition from Windows or vice versa? If I have music or photos on one partition, I'd like to be able to access it from the other operating system.

IIRC the Boot Camp installer blats a read-only HFS+ driver into Windows, so you can read the files from whichever is the non-booted OS -- but if you need to work on the same thing in both OS's you have to keep the data external or have 2 copies and check which is the latest.

Apparently it doesn't work on Mac mini's with RAID'd drives, and I read that there are issues with reading the Mac partition from Windows if the Mac has a Fusion Drive (though Boot Camp works otherwise).

At work we use Parallels, which is much much better (though it costs actual money, so would need to be).

Well, the OSX partition doesn't show up in Windows 10. The nice thing though is I can run Windows games now. :-) Grand Theft Auto V with mods. Woohoo! I have the GeForce GT 755M in this thing, so it should play games ok on medium settings.

Yes, you can using third party utiliies called "HFS+ for Windows 10" and "NTFS for Mac 4!". Check http://www.paragon-software.com/.

Edit:The above post is based on my experience 5 years ago with OS X - Leopard. I do not know if the utility still supports El Capitan.

If you have a Fusion Drive, those partitions don't show up in Windows, at least not in my experience. You might instead see a 100MB partition named "Boot to OS X" or you might see nothing.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.
