How to create data partition from Boot Camp

Mon Jul 18, 2016 5:07 pm

I installed W10 Pro x64(v. 1511) on Boot Camp partition on Macbook(Skylake). The Boot Camp partition is 370GB and I want to create a 270GB data partition out of the Boot Camp partition.
I installed a third party utility called "iPartition v.3.5.1" and attempted to shrink the Boot Camp partition to 100GB but failed. Error message is as follows:
Repartitioning Failed
iPartition was unable to get write access to the
"Apple SSD AP0512J"(disk0). This may mean
device is write protected, that you do not have
permission to access it, or that it is in use by
something else.

I did once create a data drive out of Boot Camp 5 years ago on Macbook Air using iPartition.

I wonder if there is anyone who did what I am trying to do.

just brew it!

Are you running from the partition you are trying to resize?
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

I understand that repartitioning Boot Camp must be done from OS X side not from W10, thus the machine is booted to OS X(El Capitan) that is on OS X partition. So, answer is No.

Edit: My further research on iPartition indicates that it cannot make any change on the disk if the iPartition resides on the same physical disk. Changinng disk(splitting partition, creating new partitions, etc) appears possible from a physically separate disk. The separate disk can be that with a cloned OS X where iPartition is installed or a bootable iPartition USB flash memory drive.

If you aren't trying to preserve what is on the bootcamp partition the easiest way is to blow away the BC partition and start again from scratch, selecting the 270GB size. If you do want to preserve what is there, I suggest using a tool like: https://www.partitionwizard.com/free-pa ... nager.html or http://coriolis-systems.com/iPartition/

I do want to preserve what is on the Boot Camp or an installed Windows 10.
I reviewed info on the Partitionwizard but there is no mention of Boot Camp partition. I wonder if it can change Boot Camp partition without damaging files on it.
I tried iPartition to repartition the Boot Camp and encountered a massage saying it can only do "destructively", so I aborted.
I did repartioning Boot Camp on Macbook Air with OS X Leopard which was 5 years ago. My present difficulty appears to be due to "Core Storage" which was implemented from OS X Lion.

Any further suggestion is appreciated.
