The glued-in keyboard and/or battery will be dead by then anyway, so I guess it doesn't really matter...

Hold up a moment. So you're saying the battery can not be replaced without tripping off the T2 chip? If this is true, WTF Apple.

Hold on a minute, I didn't say that. But the cost of replacement is likely to be enough that most people will just opt to buy a new device...

Current battery replacement for my 2015 rMBP is $200. It's not "cheap", but I consider this relatively reasonable for a high-end laptop that can keep working another 2-3 years.

I just went on Amazon and bought a handful of dongles and the only problem I had was the usb-c to HDMI adapter will only pass-through 55w instead of 85w via usb-c charging. I noticed this when the MBP would slowly start to discharge when I was really working it, in that case doing about 20 hours of h.265 encodes via Handbrake. I just plugged the charger in directly to the laptop instead.

The ethernet adapter I picked up has worked flawlessly at full gigabit speeds with 0 issue.

MBP lifespan can be much longer than that, if you're prepared to cascade to less demanding users: time from launch to end of OS support has so far been typically ~9-10 years, though some models have had 7.x or 11.x years.

This makes doing a necessary battery replacement a no-brainer when you have enough machines/people.

Are MacBooks really worth it? If you want macOS, get a new MacBook Air and spec it correctly.

Windows or Linux? While I would recommend a Thinkpad, there are plenty of very good choices out there.

Honestly I don't know why people think the Air is a good choice these days. The new Air has Y series chips that are little babies compared to the MBPs. If you want macOS for just browsing the web then sure I guess (and even then, with all the JS and video codecs floating around, combined with the people that never close tabs it's still not going to be amazing). If you do more with your computer I suggest a Macbook Pro.

Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

A MBP from 4 years ago is faster than the most recent MacBook [Air] and ages much better. I'm not saying the Air is a bad machine. It's perfectly suitable for email/browsing and office tasks. But I'd rather get an low-end MBP on sale.

Short answer--NO.
https://www.fudzilla.com/news/mobile/47 ... d-macbooks

But if you absolutely must stay in apl eco system, then a good 2nd-hand/refurb, of a known good model is a option.
A better option-spend around $800 on a good non appl lappy, with a plan on keeping around 4 years, works out to around 50 cents per day.........
good luck...........

Move SSK to R&P. I think that's the more appropriate move!

So I found someone with the 2017 MBP and that keyboard...yeah I don't like it. They said it took them a long time to get use to it, even after though, they still are not all 100% in for it.

Well thanks all! I think after a good length of pondering, I'll go with a new Lenovo instead later. That way I can run linux on there as well. However I'll hold out and wait until this 2009 Macbook finally gives out on me. It might not for some time though...as long as it can still Youtube without turning into a complete slide show, I'll be good!
