(PB)G4 performance with Nikon Raw files

Fri Aug 27, 2004 10:40 pm

Hey all,

I was wondering if any of you have experience with processing
Nikon raw image files (NEFs) with G4s. Been toying with the
idea of grabbing a pbg4...but would rather not waste money
on something that would be unacceptably slow.

I love my PB, but I'm afraid that a PB would be slower in processing RAW files. The question is, would it be TOO slow or even noticeably slower.

Macs seem to do better in these tests than their CPU would seem to indicate. But in sheer force, I think a Pentium 4 would be a bit faster. I just don't think it would be all that big a deal. Keep in mind, Photoshop is optimized to wring out all the performance it can out of Altivec.

Thresher, any specific reasoning as to why you think the G4 would be slow at processing raw images - or do you "feel" that would be the case?

fooland, I use a Nkon 4500 and capture to raw. My brother in law has a 1ghz 15" 512MB powerbook and we photoshop raw images from the 4500 pretty often, it's not noticeably slower in general cropping, and cleaning tasks then on my 3200 XP under win32, so no I wouldn't say it's that big of a deal either way.

It's a raw horsepower thing. If the PB came with a G5, my money would be on the G5, but until that point, I think intel will be faster in a notebook setting. Again, I don't think it's going to be a BIG deal, it probably wouldn't be all that perceptible.
