Hackintosh/VM question

While I shop for a mildly used Mac Pro, I've been reading some articles on running OSX on a VM, my question: Will the OSX Snow Leapord Upgrade disc work for this?
This is the only retail disc I can find so far for legit purchase, besides family packs.
My goal is to get familiar with OSX prior to getting my real Mac.
Thanks!

Color me confused - aren't you already familiar? I thought you had a Macbook?
Anyway, the only OS X that will play nice with a VM is OS X server, and even then it only plays nice with a couple of specific VMs whose hosts run in OS X. It's meant for server virtualization. You should be able to "hackintosh" together in a VM, but it won't really be any easier than a regular Hackintosh.

I had a white Macbook a few years ago, but only for a month or so, had to sell it.
I found this guide:

Did this ever work for you? I'm moderately interested in looking into this sort of thing, a Hackintosh being my original thought. And eventually I'll find derFunkenstein's Hackintosh post on here somewhere...
