Standalone spreadsheet program for OS X?

Mon Mar 14, 2011 6:03 am

Howdy all,

I've been using OpenOffice for years but I'm gradually moving towards Google Docs for all my office suite needs. The only thing holding me back from a complete transition is that currently my net access isn't at the level required to make this work. I can live without all the constituent parts of an office suite until I can get back online, excepting a spreadsheet program it seems.

To this end, does anyone have a suggestion as to a good, simple spreadsheet program for OS X? In Linux I used to use Gnumeric and that did the trick. I don't need a very powerful program - my spreadsheet skillz are limited to constructing a glorified diary.

I also would prefer a F/OSS 'app' if possible.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Pedro.

I'd second Numbers but the spreadsheet programme built into Openoffice has also worked well for me.

Is there any reason you’re moving away from Openoffice?

Cheers folks. I checked Numbers and it'll set me back ~$23. Call me a cheapskate but this is too much, especially considering how little I would use such a program. I'm moving away from OpenOffice after years as a satisfied user because it just seems bloated and slow and way overpowered for my needs.

Perhaps I'll just take the leap after all and go completely to 'the cloud'.

Nonetheless, if there are any more suggestions, I'm all ears.

Well there is a 30 day trial of iWork (which includes Numbers) available at http://www.apple.com/iwork/download-trial/

I'd just stick with OO for simple task though. I'm not convinced by Google's offerings as they always come across as a bit clunky — I have Google Apps setup for my domain but I only use the GMail part.

Cheers kyboshed - I wasn't aware of that trial. I might give it a go in fact.

Thanks a lot.
