Received my precious!

Thu Nov 06, 2014 10:54 am

I'll post some pics later maybe, but just received my iMac Retina!

It has all the upgrades (i7, M295, 1TB SSD, and 32GB ram..) I ordered with base memory, I grabbed some from Newegg, much cheaper!

Its the VESA mount model, so took me a few mins to position it right, as well I have 2x27" monitors hooked up.. this of course eats up both TB ports, and 2 USB ports. I may change this config later, not sure if 3 monitors are required as they were with my PC.

I used it for maybe an hour or two last night, setting up MS Office (with new Outlook client), and connecting iTunes to my music share on Windows server.

Installed Battle.net client, but haven't tried WoW or D3 yet.

So far, its quite fast, quiet.. and that screen.. to quote the Takei.. oh myyyyyyyy! I have the slider all the way to the right "more space", and everything is bootiful! Hopefully tonight I will have time to fire up Photoshop and edit some pictures.

In short, I'm happy with my purchase, and I am looking forward to getting to know all the new stuff that connects my iOs and OSX devices.

Congrats! It's the first iMac that's really good value for money. And the display! Have not seen one, but it should be just gorgeous.

Is this the 5k iMac? If so, does it tell you what your video card is?

Radeon M295X. It's a full fat Tonga at a slightly lower clockspeed, basically.

Must.....resist.....

Wife's ~2008 iMac is in need of replacement, and this is such an awesome black box. Just can't stomach the though of the monitor being disposable when the system reaches the end of its life though.

Look at it this way - your wife's last iMac lasted 6 years and in 6 years we should all be rocking 8K AMOLED displays so you won't feel bad decommissioning the iMac.

Well, considering I'm annoyed about having to get rid of a perfectly good low-res 1680x1050 screen display in the current iMac, I don't think I'll be happy pitching a 5K display, regardless of what the new display hotness is 5+ years from now :)

No complaints so far.. right now I am importing 65,000 pictures into Lightroom, installing Win 8.1 in a new VM, playing music, copying a few gigs of files from server, and have a few RDP windows open... not even breaking a sweat yet!

How does that retina slider work? If you have it slid all the way towards "more space", then is it doing doubled (quad) 2560x1440, or is it doing a higher virtual resolution? I'd have to sit mighty close if stuff was smaller than it already is on my 27" display.

Finally got a chance to play some WoW on it.. tried a few options, settled on running the game at native resolution, game graphic slider set to LOW... its absolutely gorgeous like this.. in game FPS seem to hover around 60, and fans aren't going nuts either.. there's definitely some heat coming out the rear, but can't hear the fans.
