Time to replace the PSU?

Mon Nov 06, 2017 7:24 pm

I'm not sure exactly how old my Seasonic Earthwatts 650 power supply is but I would say it is at least 5-6 years old. I'm considering upgrading to either a GTX 1080 or 1080ti to do VR this spring and so I was looking at the a couple of PSU calculators and it looks like I should replace it. I'm thinking a 750w PSU should suffice. Any tips or things to look out for?

Earthwatts is an Antec brand. Here's a review. What makes you believe that there's anything wrong with it?

If I needed to purchase a new power supply today, I would take a very hard look at the SeaSonic Focus Plus series. Here's a review. The compact design leaves room for other things in your case.

If the 650W PSU can handle your components, the Antec Earthwatts series is still viable. I have a 380W version from 2010 still powering a Kaby Lake i3-based BlueIris system. It works fine, even at idle, even without "Haswell compatibility".

Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

Doesn't that just mean you won't have access to certain sleep states of your CPU? I can't remember what the designation was.

Either way, 650W should be fine even with a 6700K+1080. That's what I'm rocking right now with a Seasonic model, albeit Platinum rated.

Don't forget that PSU calculators put out by PSU makers ALWAYS overestimate the amount of PSU really needed.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Sorry, I forgot it was an Antec... No, that is not my power supply as mine isn't modular. http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=110 is my power supply and that is the review that sold me on it. Some of the PSU calculators for the 1080 ti and everything I have in my case show a mid 500's in wattage (New Egg says 750... Looking to sell some PSU's?). I always believe that getting a PSU that is spec'd well over the desired wattage is better than cutting it close especially when you consider the damage that can be incurred if it decides to take out other components.

It was more than I needed back then with the GTX 260 216 core MSI Twin Frozer but I thought I might have wanted to do SLI. I'm a little concerned that the fitering and output may not be what it was back in 2009 when I bought it to go with the GTX 260. It's had a lot of hard gaming since then and I wouldn't mind getting a modular power supply as my case isn't really good at hiding cables.

If you're dead set on getting a new one then that's totally fine.

I'd stick to mostly Seasonic and EVGA models. 750 should be just fine if those are the models you're looking at. I'm a huge fan of the Seasonic PRIME series.

I'm not deadest, but just concerned, I just put a lot of money into new ram, MB and CPU and now I'm looking to double my money by buying a new GPU. I was just thinking that a +7 year old PSU might not be the best.

I do like the Seasonic (it's was on my brain in the initial post) and will likely get one of those.

Edit: I can get it at Amazon for the same price as New Egg but with free shipping!
