Cooling for 500D

Mon Aug 27, 2018 10:13 am

Have a machine that's about 11 years old. Need to find cooling for the case I want to buy: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Categorie ... 9011116-WW

Outside of a Corsair liquid solution which has finite life and is cheaper than a custom liquid, any suggestions for fans that wont run into clearance issues?

Corsair CLCs can last a long time. I haven’t had one 11 years, but i have two that almost add up to that.
Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

I read people were having problems with clearance in tower coolers. Otherwise thought about the noctura.

@JBI - The coolermaster is what I have now. It stopped working 4-5 years ago. Not sure if I want to rebuy that.

Thought the case might be popular enough someone has one. Leaning heavily towards a corsair liquid solution.

Why not just replace the fan on the Cooler Master? Lots of decent 120mm fans out there to choose from.

What is your CPU?

I can't imagine you'd have any clearance trouble with a tower cooler inside a Corsair 500D. Certainly not of the 120mm variety. Are you referring to RAM clearance under the tower HSF?
Also, consider the Cryorig H7

Err, yes. Someone said motherboard and ram clearance with a nocturna, but unsure if they meant double or single configuration.

The new 8700k. If the CPU liquid CLC is a 5 year warranty, might not be that bad.

Of course there may be motherboard/RAM issues, but a lot of companies have been better at that recently. Plenty of RAM is available in short stuff these days (everything new is old again, I guess), and still has decent heat spreaders.

A Noctua NH U12s is 158mm tall without a fan. Noctua is really good about making room for RAM too. I'm positive multiple people have this cooler on this forum, so maybe they can attest to the clearance for certain varities of RAM.

@Jack. Was looking at the D15 with dual fan. M0re cooling, etc etc. I hate playing the guessing game on the width with the RAM and not knowing until it arrives then waiting a few days for more parts.

So some 101 on cooling basics.

If I grabbed a AIO liquid system, where's the ideal location? I can fit a 360mm on the front, but now I'm relying on just the top (or rear?) of this case to suck in cool air. Specifically with the 500d in mind, as it has room for a 360, what's my best bet?

Up to you, for a 360mm in a 500D the only option is the front, and IMO use it as exhaust then use the front and back as intake. Btw, I don't necessarily think a 360mm rad is necessary to cool an 8700k or 9900k. For instance, in HardOCP's most recent AIO review, the H100i was at the top of the group, but it's also quite loud so pick your poison there. Something like the CoolerMaster ML240 L/R seems like a decent compromise. They were cooling a Ryzen chip, but it's not THAT different. Good fans make a decent bit of difference too.

If cooling is important to you, you'll be happy to hear that Intel's i9-9900K and i7-9700K are being rumored to have soldered IHS.

MOSFET, you are right. Corsair CLCs are very resistant. Mine has not disappointed me at all.
