Hi all

So I have a decision to make between two PSU's:

Corsair CX Series CX550 550W 80 Plus Bronze or $98NZD
or
Seasonic SS-620AM2 M12II Bronze Series EVO for $123NZD

I currently have a Coolermaster RS-650-PCAR-E3, so arguably anything, including my granny in a hamster wheel, would be an improvement.

But is the Seasonic worth the extra $ please?

Current system:

i5 4570 CPU with water cooling (just a little Corsair pump thingie)
RX470 card
2 x SSD's (500 & 250gb)
16gb DDR3 RAM

Either is probably find for most builds. Both brands are reputable. On the low end, I think Seasonic has a better reputation, though. And how much (if anything) is that modular cabling worth to you? The CX550 doesn't have it. Neither would an S12II as opposed to the M12II you mentioned, and it might be a little cheaper.

Yeah that's not a bad idea. If you've got a uATX case or a full tower, then the lack of modularity isn't a deal breaker. It's really just in smaller cases where it's nice because you don't have as many easy hiding places for stuffing excess cables.

Modular doesn't really matter to me - certainly not enough to send more just for that.

I have a third option too: Seasonic SSR-550GB3 S12III Series 80PLUS Bronze for $108NZD.

So it's a S12III, rather than S12II, so more recent. But only 550w - although from what I've read 550w in a decent brand PSU should be more than enough?

Most of the price increment is in the 70 W delta, you can probably get a 500-550 W Seasonic unit for the ~$100 NZ that that Corsair is listed for.

You don't need the 550 W of the Corsair, let alone the 620 W of the Seasonic. I'd get a Seasonic, and if $98 looks good to you, get a Seasonic at that price.

Yeah, pretty much what derFunk said. Both should be solid PSUs, but you may get slightly better build quality and reliability from the Seasonic.

FWIW I've been using mostly Corsair PSUs for a number of years now and I've been happy with the results. Their CX line seems to be good value for the money - not as expensive as top-tier brands, but reasonable build quality and reliability.

SeaSonic is an excellent brand. I like their Focus Plus line.

For your system from the OP, 550W is plenty. The GPU + CPU are going to draw roughly half of that at their heaviest.

Well, I went with the Corsair CX 550w, and it has made a world of difference. So much quieter, even under load. In fact, you wouldn't even know it was under load.

Yeah, modern PSUs are generally pretty good at minimizing noise when they aren't being pushed hard. Glad you're happy with your purchase!
