9.6" x 8" motherboard in a mid-tower case?

Sun Aug 23, 2020 11:51 am

Anyone have any experience putting a 9.6" x 8" ATX-motherboard in a mid-tower case? I have an older Dell Inspiron 3647 that's fine as a NextCloud server, and while it has two SATA ports, I can add a PCIe-SATA adapter... but there's no room in the case for another 3.5" HDD. (I have an 8 TB HDD and SSD and want to add another 8 TB HDD I have spare ;-)

I'd like to get a cheap, larger case with at least two 3.5" bays (I have the SSD boot drive taped to the inside ;-), and I have the cable lengths (USB, front indicators, etc.). But will I have a problem securing the board to the case? It's definitely 9.6" x 6" SFF board (the closest Wikipedia mentions is a "DTX - AMD - 2007 - 200 × 244 mm max (8.0 × 9.6 in)."

Thanks for any input!

Your motherboard follows the DTX form factor.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DTX_(form ... ni-DTX.svg
ATX motherboard standard is 12" wide x 9.6" deep with up to 7 slots.
micro-ATX is 9.6" wide x 9.6" deep with up to 4 slots.
DTX is 8" wide x 9.6" deep with up to 2 slots.

Most ATX cases will also accept micro-ATX and DTX motherboards, but there is one standoff and mounting screw location that is different between micro-ATX and ATX, so it is sometimes necessary to relocate a standoff when switching between micro-ATX and ATX. For DTX, you should have no compatibility issues using either a micro-ATX or ATX case. The six mounting holes in your DTX motherboard match up with the same six locations that are also used for micro-ATX and ATX

You should be able to find a passable case for $60 or less. Note that Dell likely did not provide you long enough leads on your power supply to reach the power connector along the top edge of the motherboard when the PSU is mounted at the bottom of a full-size ATX case. One of the cases on this list with the PSU mounted at the top is more likely to work with your existing power supply.
