Removing Pop Rivets

Fri Aug 20, 2004 7:05 pm

What's the best way to remove pop rivets holding together an aluminum case?

I want to take the Mobo Tray and PCI Slot supports out of my old case so I can mount them into my wooden case.
So how fast is your car, anyway?

Oh, about 1200mhz.

A simple drill. Pop rivets on cases are around 1/8 inch so just get a 1/8 inch drill bit and go at it. Once the head is off you can grab the rest of it from behind and pull it out with a pair of pliers, or punch it through from the same side you drilled from.

Go half size on the bit...just drill thru the head...and it will pop rite off.

half size? Meaning 1/16th, if so you would just end up drilling strait though it leaving the expanded part and the head left behind.

*Unless you meant 1/2, in which case that will work as well. Personally I like to go as small as possible so that I don't accidentally drill out the hole more.

Aluminum is pretty soft, so I take it this wont damage the drill bits?

Most drill bits are just fine drilling aluminum. Just use a bit the size of the original hole - drill in from the outside until the head separates from the rest of the rivet, then pull or pop the rest out. Piece of cake.
