What happened to BTX?

Mon Dec 06, 2004 9:49 am

Some time back we were hearing the new form factor BTX to take over ATX but what happened? Was BTX scrapped?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think i read not too long ago that Intel just launched their BTX form factor. So no, it hasn't been scrapped, just slow to rise.

Yeah, it has just taken a really long time to get any traction in the market. Also you may never see any BTX boards for AMD CPUs, because BTX dictates physical placement of components on the motherboard. Since AMD puts the memory controller on the CPU now, making a BTX-conformant AMD motherboard is problematic, because BTX assumes the memory bus hangs off of the northbridge not the CPU.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

It's already out there in the OEM market. I've seen several newer HPs come thru my shop at work in the BTX desktop form factor.

Slow to rise and it doesnt look like AMD will be implementing it anytime soon. Nor do case manufacturer's like it since they have to retool for this. The only way id go with BTX is for an Dual video system and on that ID need to find a
Lamp and make a wish, course if I managed that id be wishing for a dual vid AMD64 platform to come sooner....

:o)

P.S. - Not to mention having the $ to pay for such a setup.

little article on the layout of BTX
No matter how bad the new homepage sucks or how bungled the new management is...

To all the original writers/contributors and volunteers, please know that I have nothing but the deepest love for you and the work you've done.

BTX will most likely only take root in the OEM market since it fits their needs more than the enthusiast market.

Gateway has a couple of BTX PCs as well. Some of their "Gaming" lineup, for example:

BTX may become very popular in the smaller computer segments. no more proprietary SFFs?

That's pretty ironic, don't you think?

BTX will not work with Athlon64. BTX exists only to cool the insane amount of heat generated by Pentium4 with Prescott core. However, Pentium4's gaming performance is anemic when compared to Athlon64. Anyone truly building a gaming PC this year should not be using an Intel processor, and therefore cannot use BTX.

BTW will be slow in the mainstream. Most estimates I've seen figure on 2006-2007 before it's 50/50 between BTX and ATX.

And yes we'll be coming out with BTX cases.

If you go to the link I provided (http://www.gateway.com/home/products/gaming.shtml?clv=LNav), you see two of the three systems say "Gateway BTX Technology Advantage" in their description columns.
