Ok....i need a new case....

Sat Jul 16, 2005 12:18 pm

I have a really kick ass computer, but the only acient part is the case. I've had the same case since i made my computer in 2002, so its a bit long in the tooth. FYI, its a 'CompUSA Gamers' case. I admit that it might be just a tad generic.

Just so you all know where i am coming from, here are my specs:

AMD64 3500+, 130nm; stock HSF
Abit AV8
Mushkin 2x512 DDR400
PNY 6800GT
Audigy 2 ZS
120gb Maxtor HDD
LG DVD/RW
Floppy
450wt Antec TruePower

That is everything i have in my case. My cpu temp is around 140-150 F, system is around 120F. What's worse, everytime i run a graphic or cpu intensive program (either game or cpu benchie) after about 15-20 min it freezes and i have to reboot. I only have one fan in the whole case, and that is next to the cpu (exhaust).

I am thinking about getting the Antec P180 case. It looks relaly tihgt and it is supposed to be an excellent case. Anyone else got any good input? On a side note, does the P180 come with any fans?

New Case

Sun Jul 17, 2005 1:40 am

It sounds like you have the guts you need for a good system. The case, on the other hand...

The P180 looks like it has 3 120mm fans. Front, back and top. I suspect it will drop your temps a lot. It is pricey, but looks like it will run cool. It also has an option for an additional 120mm fan and an 80mm fan. If the three included fans are not enough...

Specs on the system: http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=81800

Yeah, I think that you do need to do something about those temps. Is that your only purpose in getting a new one? (basically I'm trying to think what other factors would make a good case for you)

Well, here are the criteria for my case.

1. Cool Temps. I want my **** computer to stop crashing because of the heat.

2. Silence. I want it so that i can go to bed with the computer on in my room. Currently its so loud its really there and i have to turn it off. I might be able to find a mic to give you the dB rating, anyone know a good way to go about this?

3. Small footprint. It is here where the P180 gets low marks. I am trying to find something that nails the above two points and it relaly small. I do not want to buy a SFF case and then buy the needed micro-ATX mobo. What is the smallest best case that really gets my first two criteria and is as small as you can get w/o me needing to buy a micro-atx.

4. Looks cool. This is a factor in my decision, but the least important one. I would only chose a product on this if the ones in comparison were equal in the above 3.

As of right now, the P180 gets high marks on all but #3. Anyone know of any that will get high marks on all 4? I am looking into the future, and i can forsee me buying a gf 7800 flavor card in the next few months. It is my understanding that they are cooler then the 6800s? BTW, this is a bday present for me, so the $150 is kinda ok.

Check out the Antec Sonata. It has two 120mm fans that are temparature controlled, and my system is cool as a cucumber in it.

Get the Sonata II! I am getting one when Newegg gets them back in stock! Comes with a better PSU than the original Sonata.

Sure you can find cheap cheap cases. But you'll have to spend at least $40 - 50 on a decent PSU.

Well, $35-ish is still ok as far as psu is concerned, imo.

I hope you don't use a $35 PSU with your rig :o

No, it was $55, 480W Thermaltake.

But the Fortron ones that can be gotten cheap are good... for something with a less beefy CPU and fewer hdd's.

I already have a PSU, so i don't need any. As for the sonata II, its just 5 inches smaller then P180. I am talking SFF-like cubsize

Rev_Night - Welcome to TR Forums!

I was thinking of other ways you could reduce noise. Your motherboard is undervoltable, I recommend going into the BIOS and reducing the voltage (5th picture) a bit, perhaps by around .1, to see if that helps your overheating problem.

if price is of no concern get the P180 and experiment with the fan arrangements. Many people have similar specs as you, and there is a lot of interest surrounding that case right now.

If cost is an issue, the Antec SLK3000b can't be beat. Only costs $45, shipped. It's second only to the P180 IMO.

Just picked this one up for my pop-in-law and I'm quite impressed. Very nice. Has some sort of funnel that delivers intake air right over the cpu. Comes with 120mm exhuast fan. Quality build. Tool-less drive bays and side panels, pci slots. Metal power and reset buttons. Only thing I don't like is that it says 'cooler master' but I really like the case. Aluminum front, steel sides.

SFF almost always mean you will have to deal with higher temps or louder fans, unless you can set a "silent" profile to have it undervolt+underclock when you go to sleep.

That said, I would think 140F for CPU temp is too high for a 3500+? May be your HSF is not seating properly or too much thermal compound?

There is only one really small ATX case that I would reccomend, the Antec Superlanboy. it is very small, the height is just over the height of a power supply + the height of a ATX motherboard. This one seems like your best bet.

For very low power applications, Lian Li made a case with the power supply hanging over the I/O ports, interfering with any large heatsink you may want.

You really can't go wrong with a Antec case, and the P180 is no exception. Excellent case......I'll probably be getting one myself.

Cooler Master

Thu Jul 21, 2005 9:59 pm

I have the Cooler Master case mentioned in one of the posts and I think it's great.Tool-less access ,no mounting hardware required for drives or PCI cards,it's relatively quiet.I use it for an old dual Pentium 3 rig I have.Mine has the side window on it too.I think I payed 67 bucks for it from SVC.com., thats with shipping, although it was a special price.I'd like to get another to replace a generic case I have an old Tualitan Celeron in,but I haven't seen them for the 49 bucks I paid for mine.

Welcome rogue. That sounds like a great deal you got on the case. How is it running temperature-wise for you, and what about noise?
