cpu fan error

Wed May 06, 2015 4:00 pm

hello - strange cpu fan error started showing up. when i turn my comp on it stops at initial boot up phase with a beep and a message CPU ERROR PRESS F1 FOR SETUP. fan is spinning when i start my comp then, stops for a moment - that's when the error message shows up; then it starts spinning again.

when i enter BIOS is shows decent speed 1600rpms. any thoughts on whats going on?

EDIT - the fan i have is Dynatron R17; specs in my sig

I've run into this occasionally.

Some boards have a threshold setting in the BIOS for what RPM will trigger an error. I usually set this to the lowest possible value (~400RPM, usually IIRC) to try and avoid slower high-diameter/low-RPM fans triggering this warning.

Though if the system hadn't been exhibiting this previously, but is now, that's really odd. Maybe some gunk in the fan causing the spin-up to take longer than it used to?

My previous build would do this on initial power-up sometimes. Near as I could figure, the CPU fan did not come up to speed quickly enough, and triggered the fan speed warning in the BIOS. A second or so after the system beeped and and displayed the warning, the fan would finish coming up to speed and the system would boot normally.

Maybe your fan is taking just a little longer to spin up than before.

This might seem like a dumb question, but the CPU fan is plugged into the correct header on the mobo, yes?

If so, when I see this, it is most often a fan that is starting to seize up. Others have already explained in more detail...

It wouldn't be showing 1600 RPM in the BIOS if it wasn't.

Yeah... the system I had that did this was a new build that did it from day 1. If it just started happening recently, it probably means the fan is starting to fail, or that a fan-related BIOS setting inadvertently got changed.

In most instances you can turn off CPU fan-speed monitoring in the BIOS. This will get rid of the errors, but as other have mentioned, if this never happened before I would be concerned about the fan going out. Consider replacing the fan

You need to go into your Asus motherboard's BIOS and set the alarm threshold to a lower rpm.

In my case that didn't help; I just lived with the silly alarm every time I power cycled the PC.

thanks for all feedback. the fan is about 5 months old (maybe 6) so for now i am going to change BIOS threshold. temps are still the same both at idle and load
