What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Thanks for the references.

It's funny that a word with that origin could look exactly like a word in Japanese, especially one that has such a meaning as ornate mirror. (Assuming I was correct in my dictionary lookup)

Whereas I, who spent 7 full summers at YMCA Camp Abnaki (on/off '74 through '85) with a director who was very cognizant of and respectful to the First Nations traditions here in VT (Abenaki is a subset of Algonquian), I immediately knew that to be First Nations language.

Well, I guess if the shoe was on the other foot, and the context was mirrors in Japan you might make the reverse mistake? It's an amusing bit of convergent evolution for the hobbyist linguist in me. Especially since the reason Japanese works that way is because of the origins of it's writing system in Sanskrit which obviously had not a thing to do with the origin of the First Nations languages.

It's easy. It's a field of honor with no personal downside. Geek duel of pronunciation; film at 11.

Probably my Ozzie accent, but I would "Kay Bee" like "Bay Bee".

Can anybody tell me how the "a" sound in "Kaby" is supposed to be pronounced?

1. Does it rhyme with "baby"?
2. Does it rhyme with "hobby"
3. Or does it rhyme with "cabbie" or "crabby"?

This is a serious question; I'm genuinely curious and it gives me a headache anytime I can't pronounce a word or name in my head whenever I read about it in print. Thanks.

I'm going with 3.

Oh wow, what a brilliant post, I somehow missed it yesterday. Epic stuff.

I'm actually planning on building a 7700K rig (with DDR4 3866 RAM) to finally replace my 2600K. I will name it Krogoth.

I grew up on the Lake and have guided on it for over 50 years. Kabinakagami Lake is pronounced KAY BIN NAW KOG GAM ME (GAM is like am). We have a Fly In Fishing Lodge on this lake.

it should be pronounced like baby. Intel pronounces it like someone with nasal problems. Let's just agree to call it very fast. just fix the tim, that's ridiculous. delidding is the most insane thing and I've soldered expensive electronics.

I enjoyed learning differences between American and British terms. Some were frustrating like spelling US Dept of Defense vs UK Ministry of "Defence" but other meanings were fun to compare.
For example, when I was active duty USAF stationed in England I liked to argue with my co-worker who was an MoD employee who referred to the flashlight as a torch. I said "No! This is a flashlight, not a torch. Do you see a flipping flame!?! Oh, and they always got a giggle when we mentioned "fanny" packs which has a completely arse-backwards meaning in the UK.

Yeah, we don't have a separate word for what you call torches as opposed to what you call flashlights.

But I don't think anyone's really used them in hundreds of years, so it doesn't seem to be an issue :p

Okay, okay, fair point :p

I'm not even sure what we'd call those here. Most of the results seem to be for things you'd stick in the soil in your garden or something - maybe 'garden torches'?

Only ever heard it called a blowtorch. Wikipedia mentions blowlamp as being a British term, but I've never heard it used myself.

I just pronounce it like... hmm... keh-bee lake. There's probably a better way to pronounce it.

Though sometimes I'm tempted to change it into Kirby Lake.

Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

I suggest that henceforth we resolve to refer to "Kaby Lake" simply as "Bruce"! This falls neatly in line with the long standing traditions of Monty Python, as evidenced herein:
https://youtu.be/eyVX3uJpqxc

(Or as an alternative, I suppose we could call it "Monkey's Bum".)

Speaking of Kirby and vacuum cleaners, the first thing that came into my mind is a pink puffball that happens to... well, vacuum cleaner mouth, anyone?

Still, though, Kaby Lake is a fun name.
