ryzen 3 1300X

Thu Jul 27, 2017 6:30 am

I see Newegg has AMD RYZEN 3 1300X 4C/8T 3.5 base/3.7 Turbo Processor available for preorder now for $130. Also Ryzen 3 1200 with slightly lower speed but includes free CPU cooler for $110. Both for 7/31

When does the review embargo lift?

edit: Newegg incorrectly says 4C/8T on specs page.

"PCI GPU Support One x16 or Two x8" - This chip is clearly earmarked for mATX/mITX. That said, I am curious why they list PCI GPU support and not give a total PCI Lane count. I can live with one 16 lane PCI port in a ryzen build; but I would also look to add m.2 so long as I am building small form factor.

Can't wait for reviews, but I thought that the 1200 would be a little cheaper.

The performance is why the price is higher. A $110 CPU hangs out with the $150+ i3-7350K, and would pretty much smash the $110 Core i3-7100. But you need a GPU to do it.

Not sure the TR review echoes your statements. Also, consider that the i3-6100 in the TR review sits somewhere between the $80 Pentium G4560 and the $86 Pentium G4600 and those CPUs have IGPs. Suddenly the Ryzen 3 value proposition doesn't look so hot.

Could also be that if yields are as high as some suggest that maybe AMD doesn't want to give away too much performance on the low end. They're turning off 70% of the chip (made up figure, but 1/2 of the cores, 1/2 the cache, and 100% of the SMT) and selling it for 20% of the price, for example.

Then that's even more idiotic on their part. Ryzen 3 is a non-starter. Don't waste perfectly good chips and perfectly good profit margins.

I'd HOPE that instead they're using the "small number of defective chips" they get from their incredible yields to fill the Ryzen 3 lineup. Not like Ryzen 3 will sell in any significant volume anyway. Seems like a good dumping ground.

They should, but what about more expensive CPUs they can't sell otherwise? The near-instantaneous price drops at Newegg and other stores (like the 1700X for $339, 1700 for $279) indicate that even with the excellent overall performance, AMD is having a hard time shifting units.

I thought it was suppose to complete with both the Pentiums and the Core i3s?

It is. There's a $4 price difference between the Pentium G4620 and the Ryzen 1200. Add another $6 and we're at the i3-7100. G4620 prices look to be $10-20 over what Intel suggests depending on vendor.

What's funky is that there's literally no difference between the G4620 and i3-7100 except for 200Mhz. Oh, and the G4620 supports ECC when the i3 does not. Some great product differentiation on Intel's part right there.

I already posted this on the comments for the review. But consider how easily AMD's current generation of APU's throttle. Maybe the Ryzen 3 gets a smidgeon more overclocking potential without an IGP.

Considering the "current generation" APUs are still Excavator cores so I wouldn't read much into it. And overclockers are just a niche for this market, the important thing is cost and having an IGP is critical for making the platform cheap.

If anything I'm a little surprised the Ryzen APUs are launching last, even after Threadripper parts/platform.

If yields are really good, that means AMD is better off trying to move lots of volume in the 8C chips and not so much in 4C parts. With that in mind, their pricing is right about where I'd expect it to be.

Also the G4620 doesn't have AVX.

I posted this after the review, but will add my 2 cents here as well.
I would like to have seen how these chips fair when overclocked. Without the overclocked performance we are kind of missing out on the value proposition for gamers on a budget. If you are building a budget box to game chances are that the Intel IGP is going to sit there and not get used. I think that overclocked, the 1200 would make a much better value proposition than the 6100, and the Pentiums due to their locked multiplier, IGP or no IGP. It would also be interesting to see if increased clocks affect how SMT scales vs four physical cores. It also makes the unlocked i3 more compelling as well. The unlocked multiplier is a big deal to broke gaming enthusiasts, more so than Intel's, how to put it nicely, less than fully competent IGPs and their even more mentally deficient drivers.

Totally considering building my brother a Ryzen APU based rig later this year (he mostly plays MOBAs). Really looking forward to what a 4 core/8 thread + 512 or 768 shader part can do!
Main rig: Ryzen 3600X, R9 290@1100MHz, 16GB@2933MHz, 1080-1440-1080 Ultrasharps.

Scouring the web (surprisingly few reviewers OC'd their Ryzen 3 chips) it looks like 3.8-3.9GHz is the most you're going to get on Ryzen 3 1300X/1200

I'm sure some more overclocking reviews will come out later.

It's kind of weird to me that performance is so similar. I guess, for games at least, HT really is acting like additional physical cores.

I always thought that (based on older Sandy Bridge reviews) the argument that "physical cores are better" was bunk, but it's nice to see that it's actually true. The newer I3's and Ryzen 3's is a wash.

That said, I was hoping AMD prices would be lower; to get something of a mid-tier PC you need to spend mid-tier money; I guess my next gaming PC will be a Kaby Lake Pentium after all.

EDIT: All these reviews and NO ONE is testing overclocked R3's? Madness, it's a core feature differentiator.

Ehhhhh. I wouldn't say that physical cores don't help. If that were the case, the i3-7350K (4.2GHz) would beat the i5-7500 (up to 3.8GHz single thread). Clearly that's not happening.

But what would those charts look like if stuff was still at its RRP, like Intel's? That's my point. It has to be both cheaper AND better to sell well.

Honestly I don't care enough to speculate. Saying it's doomed without any supporting evidence except a price shift seems pointless.

Though it is kind of amusing to see where Threadripper is on the list. Hee.
