Coffee Lake Not Supported by Intel’s 200-Series Motherboards?

Wed Aug 02, 2017 5:56 pm

Whelp. http://www.anandtech.com/show/11687/cof ... therboards

What do you guys think, bad info from the poster or could it be because Coffee Lake will bring six cores to the table? Or perhaps artificial segmentation, ie business as usual for Intel.

I suspect different voltage and power allocation pins is the reason for it unless Intel decides to do a entirely new socket for it.

Just excuses, they will reuse 1151 to save a penny, but swap pins to generate more revenue.

What did I say!

Don't worry, I'm sure they'll prevent these parts from working with any existing LGA-1151 motherboards. Intel doesn't want you to get frostbite.

In other news, TR is not getting a TR for review.

I can't honestly say I'm surprised by this at all. I'm sure they'll spin it as a technical design requirement...

There are a few possibilities:

1. The most optimistic one is: Coffee Lake actually supports PCIe 4.0. I know, too optimistic to expect Intel to be that on the ball, but if it's true then a new socket is OK since PCIe 4.0 is a major upgrade.

-- But #1 is too optimistic --

2. The second most optimistic: Coffee Lake is technically not "supported" on Z270 but it can basically work anyway and the "official" reason it's not compatible is for some power delivery requirements that are theoretically out of spec on older motherboards that just barely meet the minimum functionality threshold but are actually achievable on most real-world motherboards.

Remember that some guy from Asrock doesn't want to make people think they can just use an old motherboard when there's the opportunity to sell new ones.

3. The most likely one: the new motherboards are identical to the Z270 but with a slightly tweaked southbridge and Intel is just being Intel.

While this won't affect me in the slightest (as I'm on Haswell), requiring new motherboards would make the upgrade to Coffee Lake a bit more expensive having to factor in the cost of the motherboard if upgrading from the other Lakes.

Then again, I don't think CPU upgrade-ability should really be considered when buying a motherboard. This is to be expected, really.

One does wonder if the Coffee Lake motherboards will, conversely, take older Skylake and Kaby Lake models. There's also the slight possibility that we're being intentionally mislead due to Coffee Lake being not official yet, or just someone checking the CPU list and not finding any Coffee lake CPUs and reporting it naively.

The thing is that when Intel dropped their tick-tock cadence into a three step cadence, the implication was that socket infrastructure would follow suit and be supported for three generations. Thus existing socket 1151 motherboards would support Coffee Lake/Cannon Lake with a firmware update.

The generation after Coffee Lake/Cannon Lake was expected to bring in a new consumer socket. There is a new question in that will Ice Lake use the same socket as Coffee Lake?

Google-fu says the royalty free Thunderbolt 3 isnt kicking in till 2018. Not sure how much native USB 3.1/3.2 and wifi are worth.

Only see DMI 4.0 and native 4.0 lanes for NVME drives as a likely noticeable impact change.

Bah, humbug. I was hoping for an easy upgrade to a 6-core CPU in 5 years' time, when my current system will need a mid-life kicker.

Skylake and Kaby Lake were compatible with both 100-series and 200-series chipsets. That's about as good of a run as you can expect with Intel. No surprise.

Not the best news this week, but I for one am not as worked up over this as some people will be. I've never actually put an upgraded CPU in a motherboard before -- even when I bought the motherboard with the idea that I could upgrade the CPU later, by the time I got to thinking I needed a new CPU there were other new goodies available on the motherboard side (faster USB, faster RAM, etc.) that made upgrading the mobo as well a more attractive proposition.

CPUs don't get obsolete as fast as they used to, so it's not uncommon to get 4+ years out of a CPU before you really need to look into an upgrade.

That's precisely what Intel and motherboard makers do not want you to do. :P

FIVR on Coffee Lake?

That's what I am forced to conclude... adding the FIVR again would certainly break socket compatibility (again).

Naah, every time before when Intel wanted to break backwards socket compatibility (in order to sell more chipsets) they just published a new VRM specification for the new chips. That's why only motherboards made after the new spec could use the later chips, even if they used an older chipset (explaining the existence of odd things like Core 2 on i875 with AGP and DDR1). It's pretty rare for existing mobos to have a programmable regulator flexible enough to meet the later specs with a BIOS update because the specs are written to intentionally make this as unlikely as possible. So if it's possible at all, new motherboards based on the then-old 200-series chipsets should work, but if you'd have to get a new motherboard anyway most people will opt for a new 300-series one instead.

Looks like VR12.6 was the last one, after which Intel went to IMVP8. IMVP9 anyone?

Hence my point, adding & removing then re-adding the FIVR changes the VRM specs completely each time, making the sockets incompatible. Supposedly Ice Lake will get a FIVR, so it's not too surprising if they added it a generation earlier in Coffee Lake.

Intel are still thinking they've got a monopoly and they can do what they want. They don't seem to realise that their main competitor is going to support Zen for the next three refreshes. I think it just goes to show Intel is like a dinosaur and doesn't realise yet that it's world is about to come crashing down on it. I own a 7700K and if the 8700K supported my Z270 mobo I'd probably buy it as an upgrade. Now when I feel like I need to upgrade I'll just go and buy a Zen CPU and stick two fingers up to Intel and they'll never see any money from me again. Intel are just short sighted profit orientated morons who can't see more than 6 months ahead. It goes to show that any management moron can run a monopoly but once they face a bit of competition they panic and flounder. Look at the Skylake X fiasco I mean it looks like a train wreck. I've not seen one positive review. Sad and pathetic really.

Most PC buyers never upgrade their CPU and don't give a crap whether their motherboard supports multiple CPU generations. You're vastly over-estimating the importance of this feature to the general public, corporate buyers, and Intel's bottom line.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
