8700k Availability

Tue Oct 17, 2017 3:26 am

So neither the 8600k or the 8700k were available at launch from Newegg (they were preorders). I've been checking regularly and B&H now lists availability at Nov.28th. Coming soon seems a bit disingenuous. No one is claiming paper launch at this point, but it very much seems that way. Even the super overpriced models on eBay have all but disappeared and those that are available you could purchase a oct-core skylake for.

Anyone have any other info? The 2-4 week ship time frames we saw earlier this month seem to be extremely optimistic. Maybe Kabylake-X wasn't a mistake afterall...

It's damn near a paper launch, which wasn't expected.

Unfortunately, it's still the best consumer CPU you can buy, if you can wait.

Intel rushed Coffee Lake to the market ASAP because they wanted to stop the marketshare hemorrhaging from Ryzen 5 and 7. They didn't take bother take the time to built reserves and stock for a public release. I expect Coffee Lake SKUs to be difficult to obtain until Q1-Q2 2018. It also appears that current batch of 4-core 8 series chips are actually rebrand and repackaged Kaby Lake silicon (only work on 3xx series boards) not binned Coffee Lake silicon. It does easily explains their general availability versus nearly-unobtainable 6-core SKUs.

Yeah, the weird thing is you can find the 8400 and the 8700 on a semi-regular basis (I could go get one from Microcenter). They are rare, but they aren't $800 8700k rare. Seeing as they're better binned versions of the K series, it does make me wonder exactly why the K series is being held back and the only thing I can come up with is they're trying to perpetuate sales of their other chips. Not building up stock is one thing, it seems as though they can't even produce them.
