BEST CHOICE - i7 8700K or i7 7820X ?

Tue Nov 07, 2017 6:03 pm

Hi...

I'm thinking about build a computer, but I'm undecided. My choices are between i7 8700k or i7 7820K. My actual setup is 4790k.

I use entirely for Digital Audio Workstation, my main software is Ableton Suite 9.5, some synths "essencially Fxpansion Strobe 2 & Waves Element 2" and many VST's like Soundtoys, Waves, Eventide, Fxpansion.

And memory 16GB is enough? Or 32GB.

I would like to know your opinions...

Thanks

If you're undecided between the 7820X ($599) and the 8700K ($399), have you considered the 7800X ($379)?

You'll still pay more for the X299 platform than you would a Z370 motherboard, but the 7800X has 6 MB of L2 cache vs the 8700K which has 1.5 MB, although that may not make much difference for your use case (not too familiar with digital audio demands).

8700K is the more cost-effective option if you don't need extra PCIe lanes and can actually find an unit (shortage will likely persist until Q1 2018).

7820X has two more cores and twelve more PCIe 3.0 lanes at its disposal at a higher cost and lower turbo and stock clockspeeds. It can match 8700K in clockspeed if you give sufficient cooling though.

I don't think the 7800X is a good compromise here. You're very likely going to get more performance out of DAW with the 7820X, but the 8700K is going to be faster in a ton of other applications (including games), and most likely not that far behind the 7820X in DAW. As others have said, 8700K+Z370 is going to be far less costlier too. Having said that, I'm not sure you'll find an 8700K in stock and at the MSRP (359) so if you need it NOW that probably isn't a very good option.

As far as RAM goes, get the most high performance RAM you can with your budget. IMHO 32GB should be your target for this workload use case.

Thanks guys,

I see reviews about i7 8700k and processors 7th Generation X, and the tech report website tests DAW Perfomance with DAWBENCH "including DSP 2017 & VI 2017".

Quality for me is more important, I'm invest in a good CPU for maybe 7/8 Years. My first inclination is 7820x, but in that statistics from TECHREPORT is it worth it, or 8700k is excellent for what i need?

DancinJack I agree what you said, the 7800X is not a good option for my needs. I design with Synth, and I do not want to worry about what Plug "VST" I add.

If you're using big sample libraries, get 32GB of memory. If you go X299 get 32GB of memory anyway because you should fill all four channels and you should always avoid the smallest capacity available (which is now 4GB).

The more cores, the more effects plug-ins you'll be able to run without having to resort to freeze tracks. You're not getting more polyphony, but you'll get more plug-in performance. The question then becomes, will your mix of synths and effects really task a Core i7-8700K to the point where it won't run at low latencies?

It's one of these areas where the X299 platform can really do more than Coffee Lake, if you need it.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

My use is essencially:

SYNTH + "EFFECTS BY FXPANSION STROBE 2 FOR EXAMPLE" + AUXILIARY CHANNELS + CHANNEL FX's (Ableton or other "VST")

Auxiliary Channel FX's = Reverb / Delays / Tapes / Distortions / Compressors / Eq's

Channel Fx's = Everyone, it depends from instrument I'll design

In Single Core and Overclock the 8700k is great, in comparison to my actual CPU (4790k)

In % Clock CPU in Use "on DAW" exists a big difference between this 2 CPU's?...

Thanks

The 8700k is a great processor. Problem is, you can't actually buy one now, unless you want to go to ebay and pay $200-300 over MSRP. If you need to buy today, it's not even a valid discussion because $600 is an absurd price to pay for a mainstream CPU. At that point you get the 7820x and call it a day.

Of course, if you can wait then it's probably worth doing, IMHO. I bought a 7700k earlier this year and I'm kicking myself. As great a chip as that is, 2 extra cores with the same IPC & clockspeed potential for the same price is absolutely unbeatable.

Hey Guys,

My decision is almost taken, the Single Core of 8700k is amazing, and I suppose that cpu is was enough for me...

But in this statistics, I have nodobuts about the performance in DAW and Many aplications, The winner is i7 7820x, for Music Production the i7 7820x is almost or better than Ryzen Threadipper 1920X.

http://techreport.com/review/32390/amd-ryzen-threadripper-1920x-and-ryzen-threadripper-1950x-cpus-reviewed/14

I've a few days to final decision, but in principle it will be the i7 7820X.

Are you interested in additional 2 cores, AVX-512 unit and slightly more PCI express lanes?

Then the choice is obvious. i7 7820X
