Jim Keller got a new gig

Thu Apr 26, 2018 6:58 am

Well Athlon64 and RyZen designer extraordinaire Jim Keller purportedly has a new gig with a new company.

We'll see how that turns out!

Bad news for AMD...
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Oh it's not really that bad.

After RyZen launched and we saw what it actually contained, about the only different features were in clustering cores together and requiring separate clusters to talk to each other via the memory controller. I doubt Intel has that much interest in copying those features of RyZen. They already implemented everything else that was interesting.

There was a lot Jim could do at AMD... I don't see there being nearly as much for him to do at Intel.

For the products that most people on TR care about that's probably true. However, he was working in self-driving cars for the last 2 - 3 years. That's an area that Intel already very heavily invested in since, while they get much less hype than Tesla, Waymo uses Intel hardware and Waymo actually has just about the most advanced self-driving car fleet that's actually on the road right now.

So there are things for him to do, but it won't be showing up in products that TR reviews.

Wow. To me this speaks to wanting completely new cores further out, Keller isn't really one you hire for a spit shine. Guess Intel saw everything that's happening and found their future roadmap to deal with it.
