Cortex A76? In Arm’s words, it’s a “laptop-class” performance processor with mobile efficiency

Thu May 31, 2018 2:33 pm

"The vision of the A76 as a laptop-class processor had been emphasized throughout the TechDay presentation so it seems Arm is really taking advantage of the large performance boost of the IP to cater to new market segments such as the emerging “Always connected PCs” which Qualcomm is spearheading with their SoC platforms."

I mean, Chromebooks are laptops. Let's see what it actually delivers.

A 24 MHz 386 is hardly "smartphone class performance", and having a couple of then-cutting-edge features which eventually came to define smartphones doesn't make it a smartphone in its own right.

That's like saying the original Compaq suitcase-sized "portable" PC was really the first laptop, since you could hold the detachable keyboard in your lap.

Uh yeah.. that's kind of my point since I'm laying out the ridiculous marketing hype involved here.

But more on-topic, if I wanted laptop-class performance with mobile-level power consumption I could have bought an Atom chromebook or notebook a while ago.

This is the kind of thing I'm expecting for Apple bringing ARM chips to traditional PC spaces: start at the low CPU power and low power usage end and gradually move up. Something appropriate for an ultra-book where battery life and portability is more important than horsepower makes sense as a start.

I wouldn't expect it to be a Mac-Pro part for a number of generations though.

@chuckula - It is difficult to tell when you are being sarcastic, or just plain trolling.

This was my thought, too. I have a Chromebook Flip here and it's more or less fine for the things you'd do with a chromebook.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

This is the Internet. There must be profound oaths declared, even more profound rebuttals, multiple months of rampant speculation, and opinions stated as fact until they start to grow and spread like mold. One cannot simply wait and see. Clearly you don't understand how this works.

Here's Steve Jobs telling you what the 2019 Mac Pro really is.
