I have everything on the way except a 3900X. I have notifications set at a few sites for stock alerts. Fingers crossed. :)

Looks like there's some issues with newer Linux distros. Something slightly older, like Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is fine, but newer distos (I generally use what ever the latest Kubuntu version is) such as Fedora, Manjaro, Arch etc are seeing a nasty Kernel/User space issue with the new Ryzen 3000/X570 systems. AMD are not sure what the issue is yet and it may affect some motherboards and not others.

Ohhh... it looks like a systemd issue. Color me not surprised.

It's looking potentially like a bug in the RdRand instruction, though very tentative at the moment, still a in-progress investigation.

Oh, yuck. If that's it, that's a pretty sloppy bug. Hopefully it can be fixed with a BIOS or microcode update.

Ouch, hopefully it's something else benign, but at least it's not a performance impact for many workloads.

YES. Amazon stock alert actually worked for once! 3900X acquired. The adapter kit for my waterblock is going to take a few weeks to arrive, so I guess I'll be rocking the RGB cooler it comes with at least for a bit. It'll be interesting to see how much added cooling really helps in terms of performance!

Yep, 3900X is going out fast as Tickle-Me-Elmos on Black Friday. I would imagine that upcoming 3950X will suffer from the same fate but will ease-up the pressure on 3900X stock.

I'm torn about whether building a 9600K PC last Nov 2018 was worth it. At that time I purchased the chip to give me the best minimum FPS in BFV, but now I wonder if I should have bought into AM4 instead. Oh well ... there's still the option of passing the intel PC to the partner and building a fresh Zen 2 for myself ...!

I had that exact same conundrum, but I did it just three months ago. Best gaming for the dollar. I'm gonna hang onto my PC and not pass it on, but I was certainly kicking myself.

In an age when <100 MHz is almost a rounding error it's disheartening to see people get so mad that their Ryzen's missing a "promised" boost clock by 50 Mhz or so. Really, guys, the value for the money is still preposterous. Just be happy.

It's completely reasonable to expect to get what the vendor told you you were going to get when you bought the part. How is it OK to tell customers it will boost to 4.2 when it will actually barely top 4.1?

The only other vendor in the world that can get away with these kind of shenanigans is Apple.

They shouldn't and certainly aren't "getting away with it" in this case so you can rest at ease about that. Even still, I feel like there's a difference between holding AMD to their marketing and getting super mad about it and it's good to keep that in mind. I don't believe thisis something people should be losing sleep over, but that doesn't mean I don't think AMD needs to address it. I do wish we could find ways to make things happen without resorting to widespread consumer outrage.

I dunno, there's just such a thing as statistical variability and margins of error. "I'm being cheated out of less than 50 of my promised 4,600 MHz" is the kind of first world problem that makes my ears burn. If AMD can make improvements to speeds that are already incredible, then that's good. But screaming agitation and retribution as the modus operandi of paying customers is a real indictment of society at large.

Just got a 3600x, plopped it into my B350 board running a Beta BIOS.

Thing is pretty much stuck at 4.25GHz, much faster than my 1600 which would most commonly run at 3.4, but the thing isn't downclocking at all.
Guessing its the BIOS. Will wait for the next version after this big September 10th update and hope that fixes it.

https://techgage.com/news/intel-contrad ... -workload/

Intel’s position was very different just last year. The company worked with Maxon and others to extol the virtues of big CPUs. Take a peek at this whitepaper posted in May 2018:

It took Marc around 80 working hours to develop the Cinema 4D Mountainvista Scene Workload. Marc used onboard shading tools in the Cinema 4D R19 software to create the realistic pebbles, cliffs, and landscapes that make up the mountain scene.

Intel benchmarked the performance of the Intel Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition processor with 18 cores against the performance of a 4-core processor to render in Cinema 4D R19 using the Mountainvista Scene Workload.

We found that the Intel Core i9-7980XE Extreme Edition processor was able to reduce the render time from 19 minutes to just six minutes.

That's...not good. 4.5x the number of cores nets a 3.2x performance?

I doubt AMD needs to worry given they've had contracts in place for quite a while. It just means they can't be as agile if they want to move targets around, right?

Not surprise at all. New nodes almost always have production issues within the first few years of life. At least TSMC's 7nm process is producing viable product(s) unlike Intel's 10nm process so far (only prototypes and paper launches).

Expect prices hikes in 2020 from both camps on the desktop/laptop fronts. It is going to be more interesting on the server/HPC arena. Is Intel willing to do a price war against Rome?

If this Cascade Lake X revelation where Intel's making a huge to-do about "Relative Performance per Dollar" for a product that hasn't launched yet is an indicator, I'm betting Intel is going to drop its prices to compete more than it has in years across a broad swath of its products.

Looks like the 3950X is delayed until November.

https://hothardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-threadripper-3000-ryzen-9-3950x-november

The company gave us the following statement regarding its plans:

We are focusing on meeting the strong demand for our 3rd generation AMD Ryzen processors in the market and now plan to launch both the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X and initial members of the 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processor family in volume this November. We are confident that when enthusiasts get their hands on the world’s first 16-core mainstream desktop processor and our next-generation of high-end desktop processors, the wait will be well worth it.
