The review is reporting rather higher memory latency than AMD showed in their slides; the latency reported is pretty close to what AMD quoted for DDR4 2667 C14 and supposedly they're running DDR4 3200 B-Die in the testing. I won't speculate as to the reason, but I wonder how much bringing that number down will affect overall performance, especially in gaming?

Zen 2 purportedly can run faster memory at double the speed of the package's internal infinity fabric communication, while Zen and Zen+ always run the external RAM and the internal communication at the same speed. I wonder if the 2X multiplier was in effect for this testing.

Did they not have to use a non X-570 board with alpha BIOS?

They updated the review with X570 results, but there are essentially no changes (as expected.)

The comments from Intel employees are the best. That was clearly a pep talk...just not a great one.

Probably going to have to have one of them. I'm still sporting an ancient FX 8320, its not cutting it rendering 4k

FX-8350 here. Recently finished acquiring the parts for a 2700X build. Should've probably waited a few more months on the CPU; even if I don't get a 3000 series CPU, the launch should drive the price of the previous gen Ryzens down.

That's a dangerous game they're playing. I'm sure Intel has a social media policy similar to my employer, where it clearly states that once I identify as an employee, I represent the company full-stop when talking about market segments where the company competes. I get a quarterly reminder from HR of that little fact. That's why I have kept my employer secret even though nobody here gives two wits about student data software. If Intel has a similar policy (likely) and can identify who's posting (far less likely), Reddit just gave them enough rope to hang themselves.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

I thought about getting a 2700x and would still consider it if I seen a good enough deal. I have basically ignored computer hardware since I built this system in 2013. Single biggest difference I notice between then and now is I paid $1 per gigabyte for SSD capacity then, now its $0.10 per gigabyte or less if you watch for a deal :o

SSD prices may rebound slightly; apparently there was recently an incident that took out a big chunk of WD/Toshiba's flash capacity for the next few months. The massive oversupply of NAND flash chips on the market that has driven SSD prices through the floor may be ending.

Sounds like I should pull the trigger on the HDD soon. I'm thinking something in the $100ish range. I just can't decide if I want super fast and smaller capacity or reasonable speed and double the capacity.

Cherry-picking benchmark results is a decades-old tradition, but seeing a $199 CPU (heatsink included) beat a $490 CPU (no heatsink) at anything is still impressive.

There's a reason that Intel's internal memo instructed everyone to play down the importance of Cinebench.

What I find even more interesting about this leaked benchmark is that someone overclocked an engineering sample Ryzen 9 3950X to 5.4 GHz.

That is LN2.

But assuming linear scaling, at around 4.4GHz, it would be the approximate equal of a 16C 9900K running at 5.0GHz all cores.

edit: It appears the 4+3 phase VRM in my Gigabyte AB350 Gaming 3 would be adequate for a Ryzen 3900x. It'd be a huge upgrade over the Ryzen 1700 currently installed in it, though it'll definitely be time to put the existing DDR4-2400 in that box out to pasture. I'm not sure whether it's wise to put a $500 CPU into a two year old $110 motherboard, but I don't think I'll let that stop me.

[but seriously, what is the worst that could happen? Would it only fry the mobo? Couldn't damage CPU could it?]

Go with the 3700x instead and don't worry about the VRM's.

My suspicion is that your mainboard has sufficient spare capacity that the 3800x will be fine.

I’m so looking forward to TR reviewing any 3000 series CPU.
You guys actually do benchmarks for audio workstation others avoid as it requires a skill set they find time consuming.
Audio guys like me watch for pro audio builders to see results but if these guys stock up on Intel parts why would they make their inventory harder to sell by revealing the possibility the 3000s are better?
So this leaves as the only honest broker from my POV.

I suspect that Intel SKUs will retain their advantage in audio production suites due to the differences in memory and cache latencies. Whatever it is worth the difference is worth is another matter.

Such a rule wound not apply in this case. The AMD competitive profile was leaked from Intels internal "Circuit" system, and those articles were not for public consumption. I find it interesting that this one was leaked now though, when I worked in Intel (very recently finished up there) I saw a number of articles that would have been quite interesting had they been made public.

Well NewEgg had the 3700x in stock for about 5 hours and they are back ordered. Either they only got a few or they are selling like crazy.

Looks like there's some issues with newer Linux distros. Something slightly older, like Ubuntu 18.04 LTS is fine, but newer distos (I generally use what ever the latest Kubuntu version is) such as Fedora, Manjaro, Arch etc are seeing a nasty Kernel/User space issue with the new Ryzen 3000/X570 systems. AMD are not sure what the issue is yet and it may affect some motherboards and not others.

I wonder why systemd should even care, unless there's an ACPI or timer issue.

I tried to get a 3900x basically everywhere yesterday, hoping I could convince a sap at a retail store to sell me one (they didn't know what I was talking about lol). Then this morning waiting for the embargo/NDA to lift to see if Amazon or a local best buy would have them, and no dice. Amazon still has next to nothing listed which is embarrassing for them honestly.

So I went with Newegg. I know they aren't what they once were, but they had stock of the 3700x and after reading TR's kickass review, I felt fine 'downgrading' to the 3700x from the 3900x given that I mostly game on this machine, so it's probably best suited for the job. Should be here Tuesday, which feels like forever.
