Such a disappointment though. Intel is drawing at straws and resorting to factory overclocking and aggressive voltages on 14nm node in the vain attempt to stay ahead of Zen2 (albeit by a small margin). I suppose that the only silver lining is that HT is commonplace again instead of being exclusive to selected SKUs.

The thing that excites me about the whole thing so far is this proves we need competition.
Imagine if AMD was not resurgent with ZEN?
Intel would never have started to innovate again!

AMD gave them a swift kick in the pants and now they are taking a good hard hard look at things.
Just in time to make sure that AMD does not start slacking off.

My next machine will definitely be a AMD machine but the one after that, who knows?!
Main machine: Core I7 -2600K @ 4.0Ghz / 16 gig ram / Radeon RX 580 8gb / 500gb toshiba ssd / 5tb hd
Old machine: Core 2 quad Q6600 @ 3ghz / 8 gig ram / Radeon 7870 / 240 gb PNY ssd / 1tb HD

Well, at least on the notebook front, Intel might get things interesting again with Tiger Lake in Q3/Q4.

Rocket lake on the desktop also seems interesting. They might not be able to compete in core count due to being stuck on 14nm, but IPC gains and the clock speed of the mature 14nm process could make Rocket Lake a pretty competitive product for many workloads.

Ice Lake Xeons could also be pretty competitive.

I wonder if 2021 will bring the closest competition we've had between Intel and AMD since.... https://techreport.com/review/5683/amds ... processor/ ?

I'm sad that we will never find out if chuckula left because intel stopped his checks, or if it was due to the slow death of TR. I would have liked to see his take on the current situation. 350 W 10900 K, but a strong quarter for intel, right?

He's probably just embarrassed for Intel. They've decisively lost their manufacturing lead to TSMC, their chips are inferior to AMD, their 5g mobile efforts failed, they are very likely to lose Apple as a customer, Amazon is working to displace them from AWS. It's just a big pile of hurt -- more than Chuckula can bear, I'm sure.

Z490 motherboard VRM designs are reportedly targeted at providing 320 - 350 watts continuously to accommodate what those "125 W TDP" processors really want to maintain boost clocks.

Socket changes like this are annoying. I have a socket 115X PC right now, this could have been a cheap upgrade to provide additional warmth to my office some day.

That's a whole lot of new motherboards for the 5th iteration of Intel's 14nm Skylake micro-architecture.

From the Anand review the new chips do surprisingly well and produce enough heat to burn off any lingering corona virus floating through your office. The new MB requirement is unfortunate as the CPU pricing seems ok. As an upgrade it might be ok but with the cost of a new MB not sure why someone would jump on the platform.

10900K and 10900 are in "avoid territory" as expected. 10700K is a slightly cheaper 9900K tied to a newer motherboard platform which at least one more CPU upgrade available to it. If you really need to go Intel and haven't got a Coffee Lake system yet. Look no further then 10700K (cheaper 9900K) or opt for 10600K (cheaper 8700K). The extra two cores do little to nothing for 10900K since you end-up becoming thermally limited (ends-up falling behind 3900X instead of contesting it). Honestly, Intel could have done a simple price war on their existing Coffee Lake SKUs and just waited until they moved beyond Skylake-derivatives. They would have saved on R&D and validation costs.

Why would I "really need to go Intel"? :-?

To impress Krogoth?
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Outside of a few use cases (You want Optane memory and/or need to get insane framerates on ancient games, certain niche applications). There aren't really that many compelling reasons.

Guys I love watches too. Let me tell you about this watch I have. It goes tick-,tock-tick-tock-tock-tock-tock-tock.

as there any hope in expecting that I could use the same Coffee Lake socket, or am I just naive?
