Looking forward to seeing power consumption numbers on that 10 core part when you forget to turn off MCE! Gotta give it to Intel for squeezing even more headroom out of that 14nm process, though.

Comet Lake 14+++++ nm desktop CPUs (based on Intel's existing Skylake microarchitecture from Core 6000, 7000, 8000 & 9000 CPUs) will use a new LGA1159 socket:
Core i3-10xxx: 4 cores / 8 threads, UHD730 graphics
Core i5-10xxx: 6 cores / 12 threads, UHD730 graphics
Core i7-10xxx: 8 cores / 16 threads, UHD730 graphics
Core i9-10xxx: 10 cores / 20 threads, NO graphics

Leading the pack is the Core i9-10900KF, a 10-core/20-thread chip clocked at 4.60 GHz with 5.20 GHz Turbo Boost, 20 MB of shared L3 cache, native support for DDR4-3200, and a TDP of 105 W. Intel's new 10-core die appears to physically lack an iGPU, since none of the other Core i9 10-core models offer integrated graphics. The 10th generation Core i7 series, as we mentioned, consist of 8-core/16-thread processors. These are physically the same die found on the i9-9900K, but built on the new 14 nm+++ nodelet, and benefit from higher clock speeds. The 10th generation Core i5 family consist of 6-core/12-thread processors, which are physically similar to the Core i7-8700K, but fabbed on 14 nm+++. The new Core i3 family of 4-core/8-thread chips is carved out from the 6-core silicon to give it 9 MB of shared L3 cache.

Peak or full-load power consumption for the Core i9-10900KF doesn't scare me too much in a desktop application except for the cooling requirements. I have already encountered significant challenges cooling a Core i7-9700K.

Was there any hope in expecting that I could use the same Coffee Lake socket, or am I just naive?

I did not think we'd see the day this soon when Intel would sell an i3, with turbo boost, with HT, as a quad core / eight thread part.

The new motherboard / socket, again, though...surely someone at Intel has figured out that the backlash isn't as bad as the extra sales of boards and chipsets. They'd earn a lot of goodwill if they didn't change the socket every single iteration as it seems like they have recently.

Not sure if it was in the TPU article linked above or one of the previous leaks, but supposedly the new socket/chipset will support Ice Lake-S when it eventually comes down the pipe.

Right, I meant before this fact was revealed. I guess I can look for a 97/9900 K in a few years on ebay.

Intel has generally supported two generations of CPU per motherboard, but Intel's marketing "generations" have become little more than a minor re-tweaking of the same Skylake microarchitecture on the same 14 nm fabrication process over (Kaby Lake) and over (Coffee Lake) and over (Coffee Lake Refresh) and over (Comet Lake) again rather than the hugely successful Tick-Tock development strategy that prevailed for many generations up until Skylake arrived in 2015.

Matching up with the lifetime of AMD's socket AM3 and AM4, Intel has offered several more motherboard options for their desktop CPUs:
LGA1159 with 400-series chipset: Comet Lake, e.g.: 14nm Core i9-10900KF
LGA1151v2 with 300-series Cannon Point chipset: 14nm Coffee Lake, e.g.: Core i7-8700K and 14nm Coffee Lake "Refresh", e.g.: Core i9-9900K
LGA1151v1 with 100-series Sunrise Point and 200-series Union Point chipsets: 14nm Skylake, e.g.: Core i7-6700K and 14nm Kaby Lake, e.g.: Core i7-7700K
LGA1150 with 80-series Lynx Point and 90-series Wildcat Point chipsets: 22nm Haswell, e.g.: Core i7-4770K and 14nm Broadwell, e.g.: Core i7-5775C
LGA1155 with 60-series Cougar Point(defective!) and 70-series Panther Point chipsets: 32nm Sandy Bridge, e.g.: Core i7-2600K and 22nm Ivy Bridge, e.g.: Core i7-3770K
LGA1156 with 50-series Ibex Peak chipsets: 45nm Lynnfield, e.g.: Core i7-870 and 32nm Clarkdale, e.g.: Core i5-670

I think that's the part that bothers many - it's not *really* the tick/tock of old where it wasn't expected to be a similar socket because there was a major architectural change.

Nowadays it's been slight tweaks to the process, a few more cores, and a frequency bump. There hasn't been a "tock" since Skylake, so the constant platform changes feel more deliberate and a result of not planning.

Fortunately, AMD's resurgence may light a competitive fire under the 800-lb Chipzilla. If it doesn't, AMD's CPUs will be a viable alternative for the enthusiast.

Ice Lake desperately needs to come this year. This Comet Lake nonsense would be a HUGE hit to Intel. Just stretching out the same old tired architecture and same old tired process node for one more year. Pathetic.
Ice Lake is promising.

Oh please. Ice Lake is just an elaborate practical joke that we've been playing on Apple.

The Intel Computex comment that Zak wrote about (that Intel is sampling Ice Lake mobile chips to suppliers now) seems consistent with the idea of a slow ramp-up of Intel's long-delayed 10 nm process. Remember that all three of the cutting-edge chip foundries buy their photolithography equipment from the same supplier (ASML). If TSMC and Samsung have already got the next process node in high-volume production with DUV today with a planned transition to high-volume deliveries using EUV early next year, then the tools are there for Intel to do the same.

Intel has been doing really good stuff within the constraints of 14nm, though. The jump from quad core 6700k to an octacore 9900k is just awesome. (Arguably because Intel has been sandbagging on core count since Ivy Lake... But that's besides the point.)

I honestly suspect we might never see a 10nm desktop chip, and just jump straight to 7nm. Mobile has small dies and low clocks. Servers have medium range clocks, and really high margins to offset poor yields. But on desktop they need to hit 5GHz, and yield well enough to hit prices consumers will stomach.

Here in the back half of 2019, what Intel looks to be readying for early next year honestly borders on insulting. Intel’s move to yet another socket feels like a kick in the face (or at least the wallet) to its loyal customers.

If the 4xx series chipset slides are remotely true. It looks like Intel is going with active cooling on the PCH like AMD 5xx series boards. Those Skylake-X LCC chips are looking awfully dated now.

Been playing with an XPS 13 7390 for the better part of a week. Graphics performance is excellent for an integrated GPU. CPU results and a full review to come soon. I think you'll like it.

It's really disappointing and rather unfortunate that Sunnycove can't cover all of Intel's mobile offerings yet, though. The existence of Comet Lake is a bummer, because they're "10th gen" CPUs same as this Ice Lake model, but the performance will be disappointing, assuming Sky Lake can scale at all with higher power allotments.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Re: Intel 10th-generation Comet Lake in 2020 on 14+++++ nm

Certainly helps that teh Core i3-10100 has all the cores and threads of a Core i7-7700K. The previous generation Core i3-9100 lacked hyperthreading. Surely that's where most of the gains originated.

Thanks, AMD. :D
