When asked by CrimsonRayne at RedGamingTech if the Zen3 IPC gains would be in the neighborhood of 5-8 percent, the source said it would be even higher.

It surprises me they keep finding such large ipc gains...

Plus it looks like they found more frquency boosts as well...

Perhaps Intel just managed to lower our expectations after years of Skylake stagnation. There was a time when an 8% increase in IPC would be greeted with "meh", but now it's "large".

Over the past quarter century, we've managed to hit all the "low hanging fruit" in terms of process improvements, clock speed increases, and clever architectural tricks to boost performance. Squeezing more performance out of silicon is HARD now.

E.g... from the early 1970s to to the mid-1990s, microprocessor clock speeds increased by roughly a factor of 100. From the mid-1990s to the present, clock speeds have increased by roughly a factor of 20, and have barely changed at all in the past half decade.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

'Nother example: between 1997 and 2001, Intel increased it's clock speeds from 333 MHz to over 1 GHz. To get an equivalent increase today over what was on the market in 2015 they would need to be pushing over 12 GHz.

A prominent Taiwanese newspaper reported that AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su will formally unveil next-generation "Zen 3" CPU microarchitecture at the 2020 International CES.
The "Vermeer" processor is a client-desktop MCM that succeeds "Matisse," and will implement "Zen 3" chiplets.

It's going to be a hell of a thing if I can upgrade the Summit Ridge Ryzen in my Linux machine to a Vermeer less than four years later without a motherboard swap.

https://hothardware.com/news/amd-ryzen- ... all-launch
https://videocardz.com/newz/amd-ryzen-4 ... -september
AMD's 4th generation Ryzen desktop processors are expected to launch around September 2020, sources in the motherboard industry tell DigiTimes. Codenamed "Vermeer," successor to "Matisse," these processors will be socket AM4 multi-chip modules of up to two CPU complex dies based on the "Zen 3" microarchitecture, combined with an I/O controller die. The "Zen 3" chiplets are expected to be fabricated on a newer 7 nm-class process by TSMC, either N7P or N7+. The biggest design change with "Zen 3" is the doing away of CCX arrangement of CPU cores, with each chiplet holding a common block of cores sharing a last-level cache. This, along with clock speed headroom gains from the new node are expected to yield generational price-performance increases.

I'm trying to convince the wife she needs an upgrade (to my 3900X) so I can justify getting a 4000 series. :P

I'm on the fence about whether to upgrade my 8700K to a 4000 series or to wait and see what the next gen will be like -- scuttlebutt has it that 4000 is the last generation for AM4, so go with the proven platform that's at EOL or wait for the first chip in the next platform? Decisions decisions....

Why? 3900X feels slow? I think the next upgrade should be to a CPU supporting DDR5.

I can't even fathom a 3900x feeling slow. What are you doing with it?

Gaming, virtualized development of MPI applications (so a bunch of VMs communicating), and encoding video.

It doesn't feel slow but Zen 3 looks like another decent jump forward in all metrics...and I'm tired of hearing the wife's overclocked 4770K causing her water loop to scream. The fan controls for it are pitifully bad on the motherboard.

Zen 4 is likely making the hop to DDR5 on a new socket so I might as well put some legs on my DDR4.

That makes me even more curious. Overclocking was her idea or did you set it up for her? Why does she need it overclocked? What is she doing on it? Running scientific simulations?

I know your perspective on women is...different, so I'll humor you.

My wife has a master's degree in computer engineering. She used to review computer hardware (even before I did). I'm not allowed to work on her computer.

Does that answer your question?

The 7 nm Ryzen CPUs certainly need less noisy cooling than what it takes for the hot 14 nm chips than Intel is offering as competition.

Well I also know my motherboard has good fan controls...so two birds, one stone (I'd get a new board). I'm sure a 4770K at 4.8 GHz eats some major power, I haven't put the Kill-A-Watt on it to see.

What would happen if she, a proven heavy overclocker, somehow gained remote access to his hundreds of thousands of cores?

This literally made me LOL. Pretty rich coming from an unpredictable creature who is apparently ruled by random impulses, supernatural spirits, and/or gravitational effects of far-off planets and stars.

https://wccftech.com/nvidia-amd-ramped- ... tsmc-2020/
"A ramp-up in short lead-time orders placed by AMD and Nvidia will allow TSMC to post relatively strong results compared to other foundries in the first half of 2020, according to industry sources." -Digitimes, Apr. 23, 2020.
AMD is set to become TSMC's largest 7nm customer by 2H 2020, dethroning Qualcomm, and HiSilicon. AMD recently booked an order of 30,000 wafers in one single "swoop" that accounted for 21% of the total capacity at TSMC at that time. Capacity at TSMC has been fully booked since the start of the year, and any spare capacity was created due to the impact of the coronavirus.
