Sun Dec 29, 2019 2:22 pm

Well, I did not expect the order to go though. But it seems to have. Due here Jan 23.
$749 and 50 tax.

I'll believe it when it is actually in my hands....finally.

I thought about getting one, but I don't need any more cores than my 2 rigs provide. With the 7940x and 3900x I have already gone a bit overkill.
I7 4930k, 32 GB Ballistix DDRL3@2133 , 1.2 TB Intel 750 AIC, 500 GB mx200, Sapphire R9 Fury, asus x79 ws, HP ZR24w, edifier s730
HP Pro x2 612- i5-4302Y, 8 gigs of memory, 256 ssd

Do you have any special workloads that need all those cores?

Nothing serious, Video compression of shows as they come out.

My AMDs are all 2017 first gen...1700 and 16 core threadripper
and my poor old 6/12 3930 Intel from 2012. Thankful to have had it all these years.
I believe the Ryzen 3900 12 core is faster then my 1950X 16 core threadripper.

Still torn on moving over to the 3950X with all the lane and slot limitations(use this lose that).
I've got the ASUS, 4 "m.2 slot" add in card which will work in the 1950x but don't know what will happen in the AM4/3950X setup.
4 separate m.2 drives or...nothing?

If I did not have all this old hardware I would just buy the latest threadripper and be done with it.
But can't even start to justify that at all.

Guess I'll have to just use the AM4 motherboard and see if I love it or hate it.
I like my 1950x.
Maybe the 3950x will just be an encoder box but I hope not.
You needed to overclock the 1950x...PITA. But 3950x...nope.
Unless you just like doing that... not worth the effort per the reviews I've read.

GPUs or CPUs they seem to be binning the chips to the limit now, not like the "good old days" with massive overclocks.

Oh yes, I got a 1660 Super to check out the NVEnc encoding I kept reading about.
Never had "hardware" encoding before. "WOW" level fast but at a software X264/Medium Preset quality...Not for my shows and movies.
Streaming or Youtube...good enough but for "collecting"...bleep no.

Why do they cripple the hardware encoding. I could just buy the cheapest graphics card instead of buying expensive cpus.
But software encoding is still king by far!
