Wed Apr 22, 2020 8:58 pm

Apparently, these Zen2-based APUs may be coming to the desktop.

Nah, that was too predictable. Surprise us, AMD. Cancel something for a change :P

I was going to say "I'd love to see this in a Mac Mini" but the Bloomberg story makes that point moot.

Now I'm hoping to see a 12-core ARM SOC in a Mac Mini :-)

We can expect the Ryzen 4000 series 'Renoir' Desktop CPUs to launch in 2H 2020 for budget PC platforms such as the B550 and A520 motherboards.

Ryzen 7 4700G features an 8-core/16-thread CPU based on the "Zen 2" microarchitecture. The CPU features 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 8 MB of shared L3 cache (4 MB per CCX).

The "Renoir" iGPU features the SIMD components of "Vega," but with the display- and multimedia-engines of "Navi." The iGPU apparently maxes out on 8 NGCUs on "Renoir," amounting to 512 stream processors.

Interesting to note that desktop Ryzen APUs and mobile Ryzen chips (which share pretty much the same die) are always one core generation behind their desktop counterparts.

2017 - desktop Ryzen 1000 (Zen), no APU, no mobile

2018 - desktop Ryzen 2000 (Zen+), Ryzen desktop 2000 series APUs and mobile Ryzen 2000 series (Zen)

2019 - desktop Ryzen 3000 (Zen 2), Ryzen desktop 3000 series APUs and mobile Ryzen 3000 series (Zen+)

2020 - desktop Ryzen 4000 (Zen 3) if not delayed, Ryzen desktop 4000 series APUs and mobile Ryzen 4000 series (Zen 2).

Really tempted to get an APU. My needs have become modest and I'm actually already running a couple of laptops with mobile Ryzen, one with a 2500U+560X (Acer Nitro 5), another with a 3500U (Acer Swift 3).
