ARM in Mac: maybe this is really happening

Thu Apr 23, 2020 8:13 am

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... ng-in-2021

The level of detail in this story goes well beyond anything else I've seen.

Next year, a MacBook with a SOC that has 8 high performance cores and 4 energy efficient cores. It's not the same SOC going into the iPhone 12 -- it sounds like it just shares the same core designs.

So now we have Amazon looking to cut x86 out of AWS and Apple cutting x86 out of Macs.

What will be the next shoe to drop?
1. iMac 27" (2020) i7 10700k; AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8 GB; 64 GB RAM; 500 GB internal SSD + external box of SSDs
2. ThreadRipper 2990wx; Ubuntu; Headless; 64GB RAM
3. MacBook Pro (2017); Core i7-7820HQ; 16 GB RAM

AMD causing Intel to cut x86 out of Intel?
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Heh... well, if Intel still had a process advantage, then maybe so. But they've let that slip.

As I've noted before -- I kind of relish Intel paying the price for complacency. But I'm also nervous about the US losing the fab process lead to TSMC. The PLA is too close for comfort, imho.

I hope Intel can get its act together.
