So, what do you guys think of the new Ryzen 5000 series?

Sun Oct 11, 2020 7:41 am

Personally I think they have done well:

Small frequency improvement for max clocks
19% average ipc improvement int
50%(?) improvement FP
decent memory latency improvement (which is part of the int ipc improvement above)

I'm a little bummed they didn't hit an official 5ghz max clock on the 5900 or 5950. 4.9ghz seems like a swing and a miss.

I'm definitely buying a new system around x-mas and it will probably have a 5800x in it.

I like the fact that they're sticking with AM4 a bit longer. Means I can potentially swap one of the 5000 series into my existing system at some point.

I like it as well. When they release the am5 chipsets maybe the will use larger bios chips as a standard so the mainboard lasts over more generations.

Going to ddr5 is not going to be as big of a jump in bandwidth as i was hoping for.

Size of the BIOS chip is a mobo vendor decision.

It is basically a redux of Athlon 64 X2 stomping out Intel's offerings back in the day. AMD knows this which is why their pushing higher price points on their Zen3-based SKUs while older Zen-2 stock will take-up budget-minded space.

~13-18ns I think. Bandwidth is going up but only once the platform matures so the first or two you won't see speeds any faster than ddr4.
Similar to how ddr4 had to mature to get faster than high speed ddr3 memory.

32 GiB DIMMs of PC4-28800 (DDR4-3600) with Hynix chips are routinely at CAS 18 (10 ns). I bought 16 GiB DIMMs with Micron chips at CAS 16. (9 ns).

I need to rebuild my HTPC and can't get a Ryzen 4000 for love nor money, and Ryzen 5000 is so nice it's tempting me to spend the money to redo the main machine instead.

If I could figure out and source parts for an ECC build of either, I'd bite your hand off pay a pay a pretty penny for it tomorrow.

(If not, I might just end up replaceing my iPhone SE with the 12 mini, and carry on with my sad old Sandy Bidge and Skylake PCs.)

For ECC RAM, your best bet is probably to look at the "Server Memory" section at Newegg; Amazon's search engine is pretty useless in this case. Make sure you select Unbuffered in the search filters to weed out the stuff that isn't compatible with desktop Zen.

Asus seems to be pretty good about supporting ECC on their AM4 boards, but check the specs to be sure.

I would do it from the other side. Look up the kit you need from Crucial's website based on unbuffered, speed, size and CL (won't have much choice to begin with). Then copy the part number and search in Newegg/Amazon and see the results.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

That'll limit you to Crucial though. I typically buy Crucial or Kingston, whoever has the better price for the specs I'm looking for.

For workstation/server stuff I wouldn't go outside of those 2 anyway. However, Kingston seems to have less available SKUs so...

As much as this discussion of RAM is nice, to get back on topic....

The 5000 series looks awesome, to be honest. This should erase the last doubts anyone has about going AMD vs. Intel.

(Well, almost anyone...)

Getting ahead on single threaded performance was the last challenge left, and it appears they've done it.

Looks like I am for sure getting a new computer this year.

I have $1k saved already and have more money coming...
My total budget is about $3500

This will be my first completely new from the ground up computer since I built my core 2 duo!

My current pc is a core i7 2600k but that was purchased used and then upgraded with video card and SSD.

My upgrade will also include a new monitor.
Funny enough this will be my first computer without a cdrom drive though I'll have an external dvd just in case.

I'm excited to replace my 4790k with the 5600x (or 5700x, if they release it by the time I can scrounge the money).

It's just that, after my car accident, I'm going to have to wait until 6 months form now...and if I'm already doing that, I might as well wait for Zen 4 (then grab 5800x closeouts at Microcenter).

One thing I can tell you for certain is these things will be out-of stock for the first three months.

Latest info shays that the 5900x and 5950x can both easily hit 5ghz with PBO!
There are already some leaks showing the 5900x hitting 5.04ghz

Some are saying that the "official" boost clock is about 100-200mhz conservative compared to the 3000 series meaning there is a bit more overclocking headroom available than the last generation.

Heh, and unlike the Bulldozer/Piledriver era parts, they've got the IPC to make those clock speeds actually mean something!

Another added benefit of Ryzen 5000 series - when paired with a 6000 series GPU, they have an option to allow for better communication between the CPU and GPU. Whether that's a big win or not is yet to be seen, but it appears to be promising.

Yep, the new RDNA2 cards have put a light under Nvidia's chair. AMD is finally back at the high-end portions of the gaming market and has been absent here since Hawaii a.k.a 290X. The biggest losers are scalpers hoarding up limited stocks who now have to move their stuff back at cost or at a loss (mainly for 3090 SKUs).

You can see that everywhere, such as LTT. And it is not exactly fanboyism at work here. Intel did objectively have the better chips over the last decade while AMD was busy trying to survive on underwhelming products like Bulldozer.

You could still say that if gaming is all you do then intel may still be the better buy but only for certain games and only if you need that 1% best performance.

The thing that these "rabid intel gamers" loose sight of is that you CAN'T TELL the difference between 100FPS and 110FPS. In fact I doubt anyone can tell the difference between between 100fps and 200fps either. Point in fact, can you tell the difference between incandescent lights in the US and incandescent lights in the UK? I CAN'T. yeah? One runs at 50hz and the other at 60. So, if you can't tell that difference how the heck you gonna tell the difference between 100hz and 120hz?!
Anyone that tells you they can is lying to themselves and to everyone else. (Unless you're a woman in which case you might be able to see a difference between 50 and 60 hz)

For Gamers Nexus, only Red Dead Redemption is left. Once you add power/temps and value, the thumping is pretty comprehensive.

I'm mostly speaking of the insufferable chuckula. It's one thing to acknowledge a product as superior, but he and some other people just had some deep emotional connection and were really into intel. They all conveniently faded away after it became obvious intel was essentially failing on every front.

I actually purchased the 9900K last weekend to upgrade from the 9600K I purchased in 2018. At that time intel was the better choice and my upgrade path was fixed. I don't regret upgrading and my 1% minimums are noticeably better. But if I had a choice now, for sure I'd go AMD.
