Do people use them? Recommend them? Can't live without them? or would never touch em?

My heatsink is an Agilent Arcticooler, and I've never had mounting problems or needed a shim.

I don't see a need for shims. If you have ever mounted a heatsink before, and you can read directions, a shim is unnecessary.

I have to disagree. If you are using a newer socket Pentium chip with the heat spreader you might not need one. If you are using a socket 370 celeron or pentium 2/3 with no heat speader I would recommmend them. With the Durons or Athlons I usually don't use one but I know I should. But I would recommend one in any case since it does make it easier to mount the heatsink.

Fair enough. But I still say that if you are doing things right, you don't need a shim.
