Fudzilla: Ivy Bridge 22nm works with H67 and P67

Sat Feb 05, 2011 12:45 am

Nice to see Intel reversed course from requiring new boards.

Fudzilla link

Intel finally came to its senses to use the same socket and make the 22nm Ivy Bridge pin and software compatible to Sandy Bridge x67 boards, and this happens to be the chipset that is affected with a huge embarrassment and SATA 2 recall bug. Now that is ironic.
...
So once you get a functional bug free P67 or H67, you can expect to be able to plug Ivy into it and after new BIOS flash, they should just work.

Cool. Will be even nicer if the mainstream level Haswell is backwards compatible too.

Course at this point, I would at the very least hold out for Z68.

We'll see. Still plenty of time for Intel to change its mind. In fact, they might consider changing the socket but keeping the chipset exactly the same, so their board partners can just swap one part on the production lines and then get a bunch of fresh sales from all the upgraders. After all, Intel needs to do something to be extra nice to make up for putting MSI and ASUS etc through this recall wringer. (What's that? Consumers? You don't think they're going to go out of their way for them, do you?)

Seconded. When it comes to Intel and chipsets good luck with that. ;)

Besides, it is Fudzilla.
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

Yep, Core 2 Duo would be compatible with existing Intel 945 motherboards designed for Pentium D, except that they changed the VRM.
