Ready to upgrade my mini itx

Thu Jul 06, 2017 11:11 pm

I have a Z87E-mITX, an i7 4770s, and 16gb of ram that I have enjoyed over the years, but it's time for something newer. I'd like to get an i7 7700 but I'm having trouble deciding on the board. I'd like to be as low power as possible but still have the performance. I'll also be going to 32gb ram as I would go over my old ram often when doing graphic design and editing. This will be going into a Silverstone SG-08 case, with a big fat gemini II heatsink, so I may need low profile ram.

Any thoughts would be great! Also if anyone knows a good site to sell used computer parts I'd appreciate it.

IF you're going with a non-K CPU, then the option I'd recommend is the AsRock H270M-ITX/ac for $90 after MIR which has niceties like built-in WiFi, and M.2 port. I think it has a nice layout and since you don't get all the stuff like CPU/RAM overclocking, the price tag is low so you can afford the high cost of RAM. This 2400MHz kit for $210 would be a nice match with heatsinks that are barely any taller than the PCB.

If it's something a little more luxurious you're looking for, the MSI Z270I Pro Carbon is on sale for $135 after MIR. That gives you the ability to use >2400MHz RAM, and adds a USB Type C port as well as RGB lighting. I'm not excited about all the fan headers located behind the IO panel, and the M.2 slot is on the back of the board (this seems to be typical of the more feature-rich Z270 boards with VRM&chipset heatsinks though) but that's a small trade-off, if any.

Take a look at the Gigabyte GA-Z270N-WiFi and a Core i7-7700K for your Sugo SG-08 case.

Yeah, I'm not sure why you'd pass on the 7700K when it's the same price ($310 on newegg right now) as the 7700. If you're worried about heat you can always down-clock the 7700K.

Can you decrease the CPU multiplier on H270 boards?

The 7700k has considerably higher power draw than the 7700 so I'm not sure if I'm going to go that route or not. I'll likely get the ASROCK although I'm not happy with the quality of their products, the price is really hard to beat. Ty all for the tips!

BTW I purchased the seasonic ssr-550 and the plug port layout was incompatible with the case, sad day.

Don't think in terms of multipliers: most modern motherboards (ie: at least Sandy Bridge or later) let you set the various TDPs of the CPU. There's no point in paying extra for a non-K/low power model just because you're concerned about power draw. S and T series CPUs seem sort of silly these days, because you can accomplish the same TDP reduction in the BIOS.

I've found the key to eBay is being able to use free USPS Flat Rate boxes.

Lower cost for using their custom box besides the box itself is free. Never do free shipping (you'll pay ebay fee on it...) Makes a big difference in making it a worthwhile transaction for mere mortals. Also, you can schedule to have mailman pick up your package when they deliver mail through usps.com.

There is new nice offer/counter offer system even for Buy It / non-auction style. The crazy bids/messages you get.

Care to elaborate?
Only reason I ask is because I had an issue with a PSU into a Cooler Master Elite 360 which uses a patch cable to get from the back of the case to the PSU mounting area in the front of the case. That patch cable had a 90 degree bend going into the PSU and the PSU 3-pin connector was upside down. Since it was a $30 PSU and wasn't worried about voiding the warranty, I opened it up and turned the plug over (2 screws, very simple).

BTW, not sure if you were interested, but that 2x16GB 2400MHz kit I linked earlier is on sale for $180 right now.

Yes that is why, and the PSU is too expensive to void the warranty. It's too bad it was a nice PSU.
