Space Heater PC Mod

Sat Jun 15, 2019 3:14 pm

So...the fire extinguisher PC fell through. I'm actually not too disappointed about that. I will complete the restoration soon.

My newest idea has me pretty excited. A space heater PC!!! I love it because it's ironic (PC = space heater mantra).

I'd love to see this as a custom loop with both the CPU + GPU going to a front radiator that exhausts out the front. Just like a space heater.

I like that mod idea. There's literally nothing electrical inside that heater that is safe to use, so gutting it while preserving the chassis is entirely guilt-free.

That's exactly where my mind went. Though a more modern one would be a ThreadRipper and Vega VII.

I believe that you're going to want a desktop CPU to go with a small motherboard rather than an sTR4 behemoth. Coffee Lake refresh (e.g.: i9-9900K) runs pretty hot. Intel has cranked up the thermals as they have pushed Ye Olde 14 nm process about as far as possible. I'm going to suggest one of those brand-new Ryzen 3000 series CPUs. You should be able to get plenty of power with a socket-AM4 processor that will fit on a small motherboard (assuming that you're able to fit in a graphics card using a 90° PCIe riser).
Micro-ATX is 9.6"x 9.6" and has up to 4 PCIe slots.
Mini-ITX is 6.7"x 6.7" and has just one PCIe slot.
I'm guessing that the front grille opening is about 7½" square. This isn't a standard form factor for PC cooling kits, but there could be an off-the-shelf automotive part available.
A pair of 2x92mm radiators might fit in there side-by-side, but I'd rather listen to one 180mm fan than four 92mm fans.

Alpha cool makes a 180mm x 45mm radiator. That's what I had in mind.

mITX mobo so there's room for a PSU in the bottom. Also since the mobo and GPU port clusters will need to be side firing, a mITX mobo leaves a few inches to the side for cabling. Probably a hinge system so the interior can swing open like a door to access/ see ports.

Probably a PCIe ribbon so the GPU can be mounted behind the mobo (back to back).
