Best RAM for SN41G2

Wed Jan 15, 2003 10:23 am

Is there any advantage to getting DDR400 RAM for this box? I'm trying to consider HW that I might put in it down the road.

The nForce2 chipset has full support for DDR400 with its dual channel memory interface - just remember that you'll need two memory modules to make use of it. However, I heard somewhere that the chipset will perform better with DDR333 using faster memory timings.

Hope it helps ;)

Probably Corsair XMS 2700 or higher if you want to do some tweaking. And yes, buy in pairs.

Some of the reviews I have read have said that 333MHz sync bus works better than 400MHz async bus. Do some surfing and read some reviews of nForce2 motherboards and you can probably answer that question for yourself.

Unless you're hell-bent on some overclocking (which, I must concede, is somewhat limited in an XPC), it would IMHO be a better investment to go for some cheaper RAM than Corsair... But again it's a matter of taste!

8) Unless you are planning to exceed 333FSB there is no need at all to buy better than DDR333-PC2700. CL2.0-2-2-5 is only 2-3% faster than CL2.5-3-3-7 so don't go paying too much for that pleasure, the biggest advantage of having a DIMM with faster RAM timings is more lee-way for o/c'ing even though most PC2700-CL2.5 should still have a little comfort room. DDR400-PC3200 isn't JEDEC and as such it isn't a true std and can lack compatability (with other DIMMs as well as mobos). If you may want to o/c a 333FSB CPU or unlock a CPU to enable 400FSB then it's best to get DDR400-PC3200. IIRC the awsome Forge uses nForce2 with an unlocked XP2400+ running 400FSB at XP2700+ speeds and he says he wishes he'd got DDR400-PC3200 as his RAM struggles / hold him back. He says there is a perf gain from using 400FSB over 333FSB, I'd like to see some figures though ;)

"Cheap" is usually a reason to run away from RAM, not buy it.

Avoid cheap RAM like the plague. You're just asking for headaches.

Now with that said, yes Corsair can be very expensive. But they also have a line that is not for overclocking, which should be less expensive and still reliable. If that is your direction, then I also recommend Crucial.

I use Crucial exlusively in all my machines.

Yeesh. I wait 15 days for a reply, then order what I want anyway... and the next day this topic explodes ;-)

I ended up getting some Samsung PC2700 CAS 2.5 from newegg along with my SN41G2 (left the sorting facility in LA, woohoo!), but I'm still glad you guys posted to back up my decision :)

:-? CricTic I'm surprised you didn't get a reply. You do tend to get a speedier, more helpful reply by specifying mobo chipset rather than simply the brand and model (they're a LOT of mobos out there) but I'm surprised nobody helped you out. Did you post in the Back Room or something?

Nope... posted right here in the SFF Station. I figured most people here would know what an SN41 was, considering this site reviewed that product a few weeks back. I think this forum was getting light traffic that week for some reason.

No big... I'm just excited to be getting my box soon. Been waiting quite a while for this thing to get released!

I have to wait a little longer, I'm afraid.

Newegg shipped three packages to me. FedEx misdelivered the one with the RAM... so while I've got the case sitting out in the open in my living room, I can't do a damn thing with it.

I called the other apt complex it was delivered to, and they no longer have it in their office.. which means the tenant picked it up. They tried calling the tenant but got a machine. So FedEx is going to go there today and leave a note because the tenant isn't there, and if the guy who has my RAM feels like returning the package to the leasing office, I MIGHT get it by tomorrow night.

Grr...

Oh, that sucks... Fed-Ex has always been good to me, but UPS has made me crazy more than once.

Have you been to the Fry's store here? For retail they sometimes have really good prices, and you walk out with the stuff. 8)

It's up!

Thu Feb 06, 2003 12:59 am

Fedex actually delivered the goods yesterday afternoon. I was shocked.

I'm running on this baby right now. A little louder than I expected but totally fulfills my cooling expectations. I'm running a 1.4GHz Tbird...the hottest chip AMD ever made... and the idle temp is 49C CPU 42C MB 47C PSU. And this thing is sitting inside a cupboard.

My next stop is getting an external harddrive enclosure for a 3.5" Deskstar I have lying around. It needs to have a power switch, look cool (since it'll be sitting next to the Shuttle 8) ), and preferably be under $80. Any recommendations?

It's odd that one would risk ruining something that's expensive than risking something that is cheap. That's why I always overclock using cheap RAM and when I find it works I replace it with expensive ones to keep it stable.
