Silverstone SG07 or Lian Li PC-Q08?

Thu Jan 20, 2011 7:20 pm

I like both of these cases and they both meet my criteria. But which one should I get? Any opinions?

SG07 Pros:
More cooling
Accomodates larger CPU coolers
Takes bigger grafx cards
PSU included

PC-Q08 Pros:
1 extra 3.5" HDD
Standard size ODD bay
Smaller
Potentially quieter
USB 3.0

The SG07 is more geared towards gaming builds and the Q08 towards compact midrange parts. I'm partial to the look of the Q08 myself. I'd want to pair it with a SFX PSU though (eg, the Silverstone 450W SFX PSU) as I hear that normal size PSUs block off most of the intake fan airflow.

Been contemplating a SG07 or similar mITX gaming build for a while myself, but haven't really looked at the Lian Li Q08 until now. Been awaiting funds, SandyBridge, and now a mITX P67 board.

What are you doing with it? Gaming build, HTPC, general SFF desktop?

Ultimately, I think it comes down to aesthetics, where I prefer the SG07. I don't tinker often enough to be too concerned about tool-less access or sharp edges. Where is this case going? If I had it on a desk I would be mildly concerned about noise coming through the big front fan of the Q08, or if it was on a carpet blocking airflow to the GPU.

SPCR has a review of each, the Q08 seems to be slightly ahead on noise, behind on CPU cooling.

Medium to Medium High gaming. And general SFF desktop. Actually, I've already built Lian Li PC-Q07 with a 5750 Radeon and an SSD. (Can't say enough good things about the SSDs. Quiet and Fast) which is great. Really enjoy the machine but my sons are always on it doing homework or playing game. But this gives me a perfect excuse to build a new Sandybridge system with a 6850 card :)

My pet peeve is foot print size. I wish both machine were more vertical. Which leads me to this case that I just discovered

Damn. Now I've got three in the running.

The biggest problem with the FT03 (aside from its ineffectual fan positions and inefficient use of space) is that the damn thing looks like a garbage can :-? .
